Hi folks, I'm new to the forums and to Infinity (I just picked up the N3 rulebook and have Operation: Icestorm), and have a quick question about Lieutenants.

The Army List contains characters having the Lieutenant ability, but you seem to be able to freely choose your Lieutenant in the actual battle, even if the model doesn't have this. Does the ability just serve as a restriction on your army selection (i.e. you can only have one character in your list with the ability), or does the Lieutenant Special Order only get given to models with the ability, with anyone else serving as Lieutenant just preventing the army from becoming irregular? I'm a bit confused as to the relationship between the ability and the actual function of the Lieutenant in the game proper.

(Apologies if this has been asked before, I did search the forum, but couldn't find anything relevant...)

First off, welcome to Infinity.

Secondly, you must have a LT. when creating your army and only the LT. can use that order. However if you lose your LT. due to dying or some other circumstances your army can freely choose another LT. or it goes into a sate called "Loss of LT.".

Hopefully I cleared it up a tad for you.

When selecting army, you may only select one LT and you have to select one LT.

In game, when that LT dies, you have to select another unit to become the new LT (after one turn of irregularity). This guy can be anyone, even if that particular unit is not usually a legal choice of LT (as in, your new LT can be a unit which does not have an LT option in their profiles).
