Hi all,

The group and I are all finally starting back up for the first time since 4th(!), and I'm looking for advice on which of my armies i should jump back into. I have the new 7thed rules in the mail but from what I've read around, ALOT has changed. As a player, i like to do most of my work in the Assault phase with a few well placed Ranged support options as cover and im fairly fond of tanks/walkers.....tho i gather they're rather trash now a days. The armies i have are: Chaos (both Marines and Daemons as they are apparently separate armies now....), Blood Angels, Wolves, and Nids. Main opponents will be: Eldar, Tau, Guard, Ultramarine's, Necron and im not sure who the last army will end up being.

Any Advice you guys can give will be most appreciated. Due to time and money ill only be able to focus on one army for a while, and id rather not get tabled every single game. Thanks!

P.S. Hope this is the correct place to post this.

I'd say CSM is your best bet. Most of their codex is devoted to close combat, but they inherit some of the shooting options from SM like the predator, as well as their own version of devs. They also have obliterators and their terminators can be made more shooty.

What you're talking about was basically how I ran my khorne list. A couple of beaty HQs, a wave of khorne CSM or berzerkers, and khorne terminators with combi-weapons filling both chopping and shooting roles, with a few oblits or some havocs thrown in to swat at the hardest targets before close combat happened.

You can also do this with the other choices you listed, and roughly in the order you listed them (in the post, not in the poll).

When it comes to a decent amount of both I would suggest the Wolves, their calvery is cool with the Rend ability and they still have the dreadnoughts and Longfangs for shooting back up. . But if you want full CC then I would do a Daemon army and you could usd ghd psychic phase as ur shooting support.

As a small disclaimer I am not a fan of the Nids and don't know brought about BA but I do know they just cane out with a new codex and people were not as happy as they anticipated being and I likes the way they changed the space wolves

Thanks for the Advice guys. Back in the day i was playing mainly the 3rd Chaos Dex and the 4th Nid dex. So things like mass drop assaults and turn 2 charges were not only possible but worked extremely well and i loved it. Im getting the vibe that this is not a thing any more :/

From what you say: mellee, some support units, some vehicles/walkers - csm, space wolves, blood angels and orks. They all fit the theme greatly. But mind you that with new allies matrix, supplements and such stuff you're not limited to just codexes. You can make a brutal mellee army out of imperial guardsmen using allies. New rules are much less restrictive for codexes and provide a ton of possibilities. Heck, i've seen someone posted about his sucksess with mellee-oriented pink horrors with Be'Lakor dataslate.

I would go BA. The new codex is promising, plus they get access to everything the Imperium has via Allies. SW are decent too, I just despise their look

WAAAAGHT?! You dislike wolves on wolves with wolf claws wearing wolf necklaces supported by Murderfaces?! This man is mad.

Wolves.

To the op. Maybe we could make it a bit differently. You make a chart of armies you'd like to play the most based on your personal preferences based on fluff, modelling, etc. and we say if your requirements of "Most of work in Assault phase with a few well placed Ranged support options and tanks/walkers" can be met. And how such a list would function.

Well, CSM isn't that much less silly. A juggerlord with a murder sword, Huron's pokemon, demonic rhinos eating passengers, etc.

Of CSM, SW, and BA, it's less that SW is silly, and more that BA is for people who take the game seriously. Very seriously. This is serious guys, I'm not screwing around. You're all a bunch of posers. Coldplay is the best band anyways. I'm going to dye my hair purple and like Twilight because hating mainstream is too mainstream.

They just don't understand.

But that would almost imply this is supposed to be fun? In that aspect (fluff/modeling/cool factor to keep me going) I'd say that it would have to be Chaos, Nids, and BA...tho the space vampirz spin is silly I'll admit haha. Just pledge to khorne and be done with it already.

I think for ease of getting Going and models avaible I'm going to turn away from SW for now. Chaos would be run as an Allie list with daemons (as the dark gods intended it), Nids I kinda always wanted to try a nidzilla army and I already have 2 flyrants and a trygon I bought when the model first came out cause they look awesome, and I have no clue what BA are up too now a days but I'm assuming that it involves nipple armor and melta guns.

I really appreciate the help guys

CSM can still do fairly fine this way. They've got solid assault component - be it lords/sorcs + spawns/pikes, infiltrating 20-strong blobs, or other helpful stuff like a bunch of raptors or maulerfiends here and there. Ranged support is a bit lacking but obliterators, havoks and laspreds are fine. Drakes. Forgeworld helps out a lot.

I voted CSM - bear in mind a new codex seems to be in the pipeline for Q1/Q2 2015.

I think both Nids and Blood Angels are a ton of fun right now.

But if you are using primarily older models (at least to start) the Blood Angels would be an easier choice, as the nids have too many great new units to help balance them out now.

Chaos, if you add the new ForgeWorld book is pretty nasty - that artillery piece alone tore my army apart.

Im not to worried about having to buy into new models, its just that i can probably only swing setting up one army to a competitive state right now. Buying new stuff wont be a problem tho.

Aside from crossing out the wolves, i gotta say im at a loss. It kinda seems that all three remaining options have a decent amount of tools and flex at their disposal. The nids take cookie cutter flyrant x 2 as HQ, but other than that.....

I was browsing the rumors thread and didnt see anything on upcoming Chaos releases, just necrons. Have the recent dex updates been extreme? Would i be better to postpone regearing up a chaos army until after those dex's drop, or will most of what i build more than likly still be relevant? Daemon princes and the Mauler/Forge fiends seem fun and look awesome imo. blood for the blood god?

who knew deciding which over priced pieces of plastic to paint could be so exhausting....

OP I would typically say: go with the army that appeals to you the most.

Problem is, Tau, Eldar and Necrons tend to be a little higher in the ranks (Imperial Guard is scary for horde or lots of armor) for hard to beat due to some choice pieces in their army.
So love of fluff or no, a bit of competitive play is needed.

I started with Chaos Space Marines and they do have pretty stuff, you may have to lean a bit on bikes to help you along though (good points to capability) but I would place these guys as a second best. Few armies have as much variety as these guys even with most of the daemons being taken out of them.

Space Wolves have a nice mixed warfare approach and drop-pod death they are very good at (which you said you previously enjoyed). If you still love Space Vikings they have many options and get the job done. The wolf-sleigh however, we may have to pretend not seeing that.

I honestly do not know much of the new BA codex so someone could compare a little better of how an assault phase would go with these guys.

A revolution is an idea which has found its bayonets.

Nids are a lot of fun especially now that they brought drop pods back for them. They have some nice assault units, some great shooting units and powerful psychers.

Blood for the bloo... wait no, I meant for Sanguinius!
