The dark behind the eyes.

Normally, when painting fire, I believe you'd have white at the centre and/or base of the flame, and then gradually move to darker colours on the top and edges.

However, I was wondering if it's possible to still get a fire effect using darker colours (and, in particular, no white)?

See, I've made a converted Mandrake 'sorcerer' for DE, but the flames seem a bit too light for his black body and general theme at the moment. So, I'm wondering if I can darken them without losing the fire effect altogether, if you see what I mean.

If this sort of thing is possible, can anyone offer me some advice/suggestions for going about it?

You could maybe start with a dark colour, then fade out to lighter shades, like purple or blue. And have it almost black at the centre

It depends on the color of the flame. You can still go for light to dark (or in your case, dark to darker).

VISUAL REPRESENTATION:

Alternatively, you can always do green flames, because green flames are always evil.

The dark behind the eyes.

That flame is pretty damn close to the colours I was looking for.

Is that a negative?

Not really. I think the flame was selected, then the Hue was shifted to blue and Lightness lessened to a considerable degree. Using Photoshop or something similar, of course. Notice that the white/lighter parts are still ighter, only they've turned into a blue shade, and the red/darker parts turned into black.

The order is still the same: light at the center, dark at the edges. If it's a negative it would've been reversed and it won't look "right".
