Lets say you prime a model all in black, then hit it from a diagonal angle above in grey, then finally white from the top. How do models look with the base coat applied over this?

How well it works depends heavily on what you apply on top of the pre-shading/zenithal priming. Thick coats of foundation, heavy, base, or other densely pigmented paints will cover right over the underlying transition, wasting your efforts. Thin, slightly translucent coats, though, pick up the gradient nicely. Painting in washes and glazes or thin coats from an airbrush really makes the most of the varied undercoat. If you prefer solid, saturated blocks of color, it's probably not the technique for you - you won't even see it at the end.

I found this works pretty well (depending on colour), assuming your basecoat colour is SUPER thin. You also, therefore, want your primers thinned so you don't get a spotty appearance.
I did this as a test with some DV SM units (choosing colours) I will try to get some pictures together tonight

I tried it on my konrad curze but the kantor blue base really took away most of it and i highlighted it normally anyway. It does work well for some things though. Yellows, light greens, reds work pretty well
