Hello, I'm a beginner and me and my SO we both want to try the game. We watched a game of 40k in the GW but I do not like the armies in DV so I'm thinking about doing this:
Since I like painting, I will just slowly gather 2 small armies consisting of max 2 squads of units each. Get the rules and army books online or just ask GW folks in the store. Get my own dice and basically
use other stuff for the equipment until I have money to buy them as well.
So in this case I really need some advices as I have no clue about armies that would be fun agains each other. Most importantly units.
I really love the way dark eldar, tyranids and chaos demons look, its not strictly these but I'd like to know which units would be the best to pickk from these to form small armies to play together and see if we'd like to expand in the future.
I'm also curious about what people think of this, if it makes sense for a beginner or if a starter kit makes more sense?

Thanks in advance and I hope this was the right section to post.

Starter kits are good because you get two forces which are roughly balanced and which contain a broad selection of models, covering most of the aspects of the games; additionally, you end up with dice and a summary of the rules.

I'm not saying go out and buy DV if you don't like the armies-you should stick to collecting an army you will actually enjoy. A sensible alternative might be to look on ebay and other similar sites, you can usually find quite a bit of 2nd hand stuff that will cover you for reasonably cheap.

Alternatively, go to your nearest GW store and ask for a quick beginner game with an army that interests you-depending on who runs the store, you can usually get a lot of info out of doing this, especially if they're open to letting you pick your army.

It makes sense to purchase a starter box with the rules. These are good deals too, as far as the models you get for the cost. They are also well structured to learn the game quickly.

From there, I recommend going with a GW Battle Force box. I've played 40k for 10 years. If I were to start a new army, I'd get a BF box of the one I liked.

Which army? I have owned all but 3 of the total armies GW puts out, so really, it's truly "What you like." At various points I have liked them all, even through codex changes.

Good advice. Exactly how my Daughter went about it.

Went in store, asked for a game. GW manager took her straight to the display case and asked what she liked the look of. ten minutes later she was using some of the best painted nids to eat marine's faces.

After that she got a codex, made a few choice buys in store and boosted them with some ebay stuff and soon had a workable army.

Of course once you start.....

Never forgive, never remember!

I think some of the best small games I've played were some marines against a horde of enemies; on the contrary, it's also pretty fun to play some marines against a demon army that has one really strong prince and some little gribblies to feel good about shooting ha! For me the games that feel the best are ones where each opponents major melee characters find each other on the battlefield and then your support troops just volley back and forth around the main fight. Marines vs Tyranids or Demons fit that in my opinion. Hope that helps!
