So, I'm brand new to Warhammer 40k. I started out with the BA vs. Tyranids starter pack, but have recently got started with my dream chapter, the Grey Knights!!! Well, I bought the Nemesis Vanguard set to start with, and after doing some checking, I'm under the impression that the regular Land Raider that comes with it is about worthless, and I'm better off with a Land Raider Crusader. Well, my question is, if I just by the weapons for the Crusader and put those on instead, does that make it a Crusader set up? Or is the Crusader model something entirely different?

EDIT - I should say that this is for the Grey Knights army

The Crusader does have a few different bits for its wargear, but the basic vehicle is the same. The LRC just has the fragmentation launchers, the Hurricane Bolter sponsons, and a pintle mounted multi-melta.

Unfortunately, the only models that will see regular play from that boxed set in a GK list is the Dreadknight, the Terminators, and rarely Interceptor squads(which you can make the PAGKs into using the backpacks with the tesla coils)

The GK codex is all about terminators, Librarians, and Dreadknights. With the occasional Interceptor squad.

If you do run a Land Raider with GKs, then the one with lascannons is actually better. We lack long range and anti-tank. And while the regular Land Raider is expensive for that, it does provide some long ranged anti-tank.

Thanks for the quick reply and the info! I've heard that later on I won't be using it near as much and I'm better off getting a Raven if I want a vehicle, but right now I just want to get something around 1000 pts so I can learn at the local comic store, there's not many people that will even bother to teach you at around my 750ish set up of BA's right now, they say not enough is there for most rules to apply?

750 is plenty for a beginner game, but they are sort of correct. Once you have the basics down its necessary to move on to 1500ish points. The game breaks down below 1000 and above 3000, with the sweet spot being 1500-2000. Its where the game is most balanced as some armies are way too powerful or weak outside of that zone.

Awesome, glad to know they're just trying to help and not trying to shun beginners! Hopefully next check I will be able to get a few more units and be set for a few practice games, thanks for the help!

I sadly have to agree with this. As much as I love to be able to get in some quick 500 pointers, you always get someone that brings something extreme that you have no hope of countering if you build a balanced 500 list. Double those points though and now you can throw in some units that have more specialized roles, such as anti-tank, that you can't always afford at 500. I personally think ideal games are more like 1000-1500, but that's what I'm most used to playing.

If you do want to get in some practice at a small level before you get all of your stuff done, see if any of the guys there have played kill team. It's not for everyone, but it's what we often use as an introduction to the game for newer players instead of trying a 500 pointer or going all in at 1000+
