Hey all,

Basically, i was given a large cron force, that im slowly orkifying to use as allies for my orks, but on occasion also as ork units in a pure ork list (aka why im grotifiying them and not simply painting them standard).
Im looking for some advice on painting them, as I have a few methods in mind. overall, I am going with rusty crons, with badmoons yellow being the main colour. as I will be doing the vehicles also, I will primarily be looking to use my airbrush, so if I can use the same method for vehicles and infantry that will be best (aka Solar hates painting, Solar likes speed painting crons!)

The initial models to be painted will be;
2x warrior squads
2x ghost ark
overlord

My proposed methods;
Salt n' hairspray
  • Airbrush a rust colour
  • hairspray and salt
  • spray with yellow
  • scrub off salt to get weathered effect
  • wash and do final touches as required

  • sponge weathering
  • Airbrush yellow
  • sponge on black and then silver
  • use pigment powders to do rusting
  • wash and do final touches

  • Drybrushing
  • Spray black
  • dry drush silver
  • rust using pigments
  • paint on yellow where needed

  • Currently im leaning towards method 1; salt n hairspray, for the vehicles and infantry this seems the fastest, as I can literally just go to town paint everything rusted, hairspray and salt it all in one go, spray them all yellow and then chip them all in one go. The only bits requiring individual work will be the details. However, i really enjoy using pigment powders (painted an entire BW using powders and drybrushing silvers - its also my junka, so HAD to be a total rust bucket), maybe I could add some pigment powders into method one as a final touch?

    Heres an example of the warriors/overlord WIPs. going for a comical look, akin to when C3PO gets his head swapped in attack of the clones;

    Let me know what you think Speed painting is key! but to a reasonable standard.

    either of these are the official tools. My only complaints about them are they are a little small, so doing long cables is a pain in the backside.
    You can use a standard comb, from any shop that sells make-up to good effect. just use like a rolling pin. The only advantage of these tools is that the bottom pad is also grooved, so you can make cables with a more zigzag pattern, whereas a comb will make a more flatter cable. try a comb you've probably got one at home.

    I've come to realise that using the tube makers you can make models really easily and hide lots of problematic details. Plus it actually looks pretty cool. Currently i'm working on a ork bike, it looks like a cross between one of the sentinels from the matrix and a japanese dragon. So it has a head, with two necron cannons from a spyder(? i think), then the entire body is just those GS cables wrapped around a wire core (for actual strength and stability). By taking it as a theme you can make it look quite effective and its really simple and fun

    i'll post some pics later of the bike to show you what I mean. As with the necron overlordgrot I simply used it because I couldn't workout a way to give him the staff.
    Any advice on my painting methods? I think I am gona try some tests next week once i've converted some more grotcrons!
