Hello - Anybody else have a problem with washes drying shiny? I'm using citadel washes. The main culprit seems to be drakenhoff(?) nightshade. It doesn't happen all the time either. Mostly a nice matt effect. Just the occasional one goes glossy. Any ideas why and how to prevent it?
Cheers.

Shake the pot nicely, the shiny effect happens when the wash isn't shaken enough. Source: messed it up too many times

Perhaps not, but since GW seems to subsist off sadness and pain, I can't rule it out.

Also, don't worry too much about the shine of the paints. Final shine will be controlled by the varnish anyways.

What I do is put lamahan medium down on it after that matts it down.

Thanks for the tips folks. I'll make sure to properly shake up the pot next time. Never tried any varnishes or lamahan medium. Does it make a big difference to the look of the models?

Standard practice for me is to give a model a good spray with the matte varnish when I'm finished. Matte looks miles better than gloss unless you're SPECIFICALLY going for the gloss look, such as with certain blood effects and metal plating like some of the FW artists do. Not to mention a varnish will keep your models from chipping and scratching so easily after being handled on the battlefield

Its essential unless you like touching up chipped paint for the life of the model.

A good matte varnish for me orks. I would recommend it something you get into. It helps seal your colours, layers and prevents 'easy' damage. They also help with certain mediums, for example if you want to get into oil washes eventually you will want to varnish first to protect the under layers from the fact you'll probably be thinning them with whitew spirit. Also good for sealing in powders if you get into those.

So imo, worth using and being aware of

I'll give it a go then and see how I get on. Any tips as to what brand to buy? I would definitely be aiming for matte rather than gloss. Purity seal? Is that a matte varnish. I'm sure my mate uses it and the models he has used it on have a grainy horrible texture which makes my skin crawl to touch.

Actually, it's only essential if you game with them. If they go from paint table to display case, there's no need to varnish, unless you have gloss consistency issues

Testors Dullcote is better than Purity Seal, in my opinion. It goes on very nicely. A close second is Mr. Hobby, which makes both a matte and satin.

Personally, I'm a big fan of satin over ultramatte.

Make sure not to spray in high humidity, and bring it in somewhere room temperature and dry immediately after varnishing.
