Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions
|
I'm finaly painting up my Choas marines and to go along with them I'm doing conversions for forge world models I can't afford from IA:13. Since my main goal is to finish painting as much of my guys as possible, I'm fitting conversions and builds into my schedule when I need a break from painting. So far I'm almost halfway done my weapons platforms and I've biue tacked the pieces of one heldrake together as a guide for my heltalons and I'm starting to actually cut and carve up the second one into shape. Since those are all planned out and underway, I'm looking forward to plan my next project, a Relic Sicaran Battle Tank. I proxied one of these using a land raider hull and while it wasn't a huge game changer, it was a fun unit. So, I'd like to build one.
I'm thinking of starting with a landraider hull and then cutting the main hull pieces down to the "proper" shape and then plasticarding from there.
Has anyone else converted one? If so, I'm really just looking for pictures to give me some insperation and/or the knowledge that it's possible.

I'd agree that unless you are freakishly confident in your plasticarding skills you run the risk of destroying a landraider and failing to make the sicarian, and the act of buying a second landraider if the first conversion whiffs then takes you over the cost of just buying the Sicarian outright.

Have you considered papercraft? If anything you could use the template as a template for a straight plastic card build.

How will you be running imperial armor 13 stuff without the book???
Papercraft is probably the quickist way if you can source plasticard (garage sale signs at home depot is fairly cheap)

That is good food for thought, but I'd hate to have converted the far cheaper weapons platforms or even heltalon and then just go out and buy the expensive battle tank. I'm worried that doing so will detract from the overall look a feel of my army. 85+percent is previously used and reclaimed and some of it intentionally roughtly converted to chaos. If it looks too clean and amazingly sculpted then the rest of the stuff will look out of place. The idea behind the army is that they're recent renegades, the last 1000-2000 years or so, kicking around and enjoying not being tools of the corpse emperor, as opposed to a traitor legion warband that has carefuly and lovingly maintained such a glorious piece of technological death on tracks from ages past.
So, long story short, I'd really prefer to build one. Make it look like they found pieces or a wrecked hulk of one and rebuilt it.
Just looking at the pictures on the Forge world site, I think it should be fairly simple (but probably not easy) to get the right shape for the front half. The back half can stay the same and the biggest issue might be the tracks. For now, the turret is last on my list of worries.
If anyone has done it or seen it done... Pics please.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm trying to get my hands on the book and that's something that I'll have to actually buy instead of making my own. The main reason I'm looking to convert as opposed to scratchbuild an exact copy is because of the the little details on a GW model. I've seen paper/plasticard Heltalons that are exact copies of the Forgeworld shape, but the fine detail isn't there. This is my blue-tacked guide for my Heltalon conversion.
The shape is there (and I haver some interesting ideas for the cockpit, but what I really like is all the details on the parts that I either wouldn't be able to do, or wouldn't be able to do well.

I have converted one from a Land Raider. I was inspired by a conversion on Bolter and Chainsword. The thread is."..Fire Falcons Sicaran mk II No resin allowed" Also search tags Sicaran , scratchbuilt, and orange. Mine was more simplified but acceptable. I will try to post pics.

Thanks man, that was exactly what I was looking for. The pics in his thread are great food for thought. Especially as he cut from the top and still made it look great. I was picturing cutting the middle out to keep the area on top for the tracks, but now, maybe not. I'd love to see your pictures if you post any up.
I'm plowing through my painting fairly quickly and I like to break it up with some converting, so I'll make sure to post some wip pics in my P/M blog ( http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/625289.page). Hopefully my Weapon's platforms and Heltalons go well, so I can start on the Sicaran ASAP.
