I've never played against guard in a large game, so never went up against squads of leman russes until the other day. I'm not at all familiar with guard rules, so went along with what he said, but it seemed kind of odd the way he was playing his tanks.

First off, since you do purchase them as a unit they have to stay in unit coherency. All have to fire at the same target (unless tank commander gives them split fire). etc etc

The bit that I was a bit questioning about is that, being a unit, they ignore each other when they fire? This makes sense for infantry, but does it apply to vehicles as well (especially considering sponsons have a set firing arc)?

It makes sense by rules standards the way he played, was just curious if that's how everyone else plays it.

You did read the 'Vehicle Squadrons' section in the main rulebook?

Wow. Didn't even realize that was in the BRB. Didn't know anyone but guard could get squadrons so figured for whatever odd reason it'd be in their codex

Oh yeah other armies have squadrons. Eldar (war walkers) Orks (Buggies, killa kans), Tau (Skyrays, Hammerheads)

and I'm sure there is more, thats just what I am thinking about.

But I have a related question that came up when I was playing someone who was using vehicle squadrons and trying to use them incorrectly. He also claimed that he played at Adepticon and other tournaments and nobody corrected him.

He had a unit of Sentinels, all with lascannons. He fired one lascannon first, then activated its searchlight, then proceeded to claim he could fire the rest of the lascannons from the sentinel unit at the same target and take advantage of the searchlight that was used.

I wouldn't let him, and we had a third person come over to review, the third person agreed with me, but the guy was saying that no tournaments would rule in the way we said.

units in a squadron all have to fire at the same time, they can fire weapons in different groups like normal units, but all the firing is resolved in those groups before the next.

If a vehicle has a searchlight, it can, after firing all of its weapons, choose to illuminate its target with the searchlight.

So the whole squadron would have to fire their weapons, then they could do searchlight(s) after firing all of their weapons. It would not be possible for the unit to benefit from its own searchlight(s).

Treating it the way the player wanted would mean you would fire one vehicle in the squadron and fully resolve it, then fire the next, etc but that is not how vehicle squadrons work.

the person was ruled against correctly.

Every tournament would rule the way you said. Being squadroned means that all the models in the unit have to fire at the same time, so by the time they get to use the searchlight, the whole squadron would've finished firing.

That's what I figured, but not having ever attended any major tournaments I didn't know if they had any special rules. I had heard somewhere that many tournaments turn a 2+ rerollable in to a 4+ on the reroll.

But I thought that in this instance he was just trying to play it the way he *wished* it worked.
