So, I've been working on an Index Astartes and in part of it, the Chapter Master and a Demi-Company of Terminators disappear into the Warp when they attempt to teleport onto the surface of a planet to engage in combat. Then, Daemons start pouring into the ship and slaughter its crew and a huge battle ensues between the couple of squads that remained behind. Daemons activate the Warp Drive moments before the ship gets blown to smitherines by the orders of the ship's captain, and a hole forms into the Warp. An endless tide of Daemons start coming out of it and utterly massacre the Chapter's Fleet that only survives because one of their Battle Barges bee-lines into the Warp Gate and detonates its Warp Drive; closing the Gate. After this, the remnants of the Ork fleet the Chapter had engaged previously detect how vulnerable to Fleet is and come back and fething murder the remnants, and only a Strike Cruiser and a squad of Gladii escape.

So, my question, what form of Daemon would be most likely to decide to destroy a Chapter for no reason whatsoever, just 'cause? I was thinking either Tzeentch or Khornate Daemons, but I can't be sure. The primary reason I'm asking is because then the Daemon that orchestrated the whole attack becomes the Chapter's greatest enemy as they seek out the Daemon wherever its mentioned, and then eventually finds it and that becomes the basis for a big story.

There's more "unaligned" Daemons in the Warp than the infinite legions of the Great Four combined.

In other words? Make it up. Go with whatever sounds good.

Make it up sounds about right. There are thousands of types of demons. I'll look through my DH books though, to see if I can find anything.

Between

Probably a Fury, they're the most numerous.

Failing that, a Seeker or a Screamer, they're fastest.

Mmmm.... I am thinking your first guess was right, Tzeentch or Khorne.

Tzeentch, because he's the one who would know this is about to happen, and would direct his hordes to appear at the right place at the right time.

Khorne, because a mob of Furys would never be able to pull off the destruction of a fleet. A couple senior Bloodthirsters, tho, might be good candidates for that kind of destruction.

Any -- the Daemons of the Warp are just so eager to F some S up in the material worlds that they'll grab every chance to enter real space -- most notable of which are the psykers.

So it stands to reason that if a warp disturbance (like a Teleportarium "incident"), any Daemons close enough to the source of disturbance (in whatever geographical sense there is in the warp) will no doubt take the opportunity with no hesitation.

Could be a Daemon, could be some form of other warp dwelling creature, the Enslavers are always fun.

I would go with Tzeench. The reason is because alot of stuff had to happen for that to be the perfects storm of suck that they had to go through. There is a lot of Just As Planned involved here. Also it could be a mixed horde A Tzeench Herald could have brought Kornate furies and screamers and flamers too. Basically it could be a combined host for the ultimate goal of decimating a pace marine chapter. Also you may look at explaining the incident a bit more. I know that teleporter accidents happen, but if the chapter is at risk of total destruction from a teleporter mishap why do they use it. Include a bit about the machinery or a serf being corrupted and orchestrating it. Without some clarification it makes it sound like the chapter, was reckless, incompetent or weak to have fallen to an incursion after a malfunction in a fairly common piece of war gear.

Will do, I hadn't thought about making it an inside job. And Tzeentch sounds like the best idea, I'll make sure to have a random Space Marine twirling his moustachio and saying "Just as planned..."

it could also just be a case of 'whatever demons were close to the breach when it happened'. In that case you'd almost certainly have a random assortment of daemonic entities of every stripe.

You could still have the random demons clustered around a de facto leader - doubtless the strongest and most aggressive of the bunch - that can direct activities after they enter realspace. That way you can get the 'arch-nemesis' you seem to want.

If you're looking for a true 'mastermind' who foresaw everything and coordinated minions to take advantage of it, by all means go with Tzeentch. In that case the bulk of the demons should probably be the more 'reliable' (to a slave of the Architect of Fate) Tzeentchian schlubs.
