I have been getting into Mantics awesome rules for Kings of War. Big LOTR fan as well, so I decided to put the two together. I recently re-discovered 1/72 plastics..the kind you get in hobby shops. The value is terrific..sometimes 40 figures for 15 bucks, the detail is very good and since I game with the kids, I like the idea that the plastic is soft...no sharp GW spearmen to take out an 8 year olds eye. Here are some pics of my Gondor force. The spearmen are HAT EL Cid Spanish. the kit has about 80 figures for about 18 bucks. Here are some Gondor Spearmen

Here are some elite Gondor Troops. I am basing the stats of all of the troops, good and bad on the Kingdoms of Men list. Using these as foot guard.

Thanks. I have a very simple method...prime with gesso, then base colors, wash, and then a "dusting"....I drybrush the entire figure with a very light hit of white...the faintest amount highlights the whole figure. I am building both sides, so need to crank it out. This is a very fast method and works well with the 1/72 scale.

One more for the forces of good...two headed hill giant. 28mm figures really stand out next to the 1/72's. This project is giving me a way to re-purpose all those old GW figures.

Yes...going by the ideas in the Silmarilion, Orcs are corrupted elves rather then these brutish Jacksonesque/GW types..so just mix and matching various kits...so far used samurai, ancient egyptians and sea peoples all mixed together....I just slice of the nose with a sharp x-acto to give a more animalistic appearence. Pics to come.

Thanks. The small scale works welll for mass battle games...they are quick to paint and the scale feels more right than the oversized GW figures. Part of the appeal is finding the models that fit the LOTR storyline. So for example, these Gondor Elite were based on the Ceasar 15th century Knights, half the figures came with full helmet, so using those as Black Numenorian, but the ones with the open helmets work for the good guys. Its fun hunting down the kits and mixing and matching....the HAT Spearmen for example look like the defenders of Minas Tirth in the ROTK cartoon from the 70's, but am using these Ceasar swordsmen as opposed to the HAT Spanish. And adding fantasy 28mm models make you forget you are looking at a bunch of historical figures. I had these GW dwarf catapults lying around. The scale feels more epic next to these 1/72s

This scale makes more sense for a mass fantasy battle game...15mm is too small, 28mm way too big, but 1/72 really hits the sweet spot...the 28mm really stand out. Here are is an old GW Woodelf Warhawk as an eagle.

Yes. I have the elves and dwarves...One thing about the elves, they are VERY tall...almost 25mm..I think I will use them as Noldor...meantime, here is a dwarf test. Too late for the orcs though...my OCD will not allow me to mix them in so will keep mixing various ancients with the reddish skin...too bad as theyt are really nice and they have a line of warg riders. In regards t o the Gondor, I felt the same way! They just looked "right" when I saw them. But then I recently re-watched the old ROTK cartoon form the early 80's...that is how Gondor looks in the cartoon...must be a subliminal trigger or something!

Thanks for the tip. I just grabbed a box of zevda Macedonians Pikemen to use as elite orcs....will try it. And yes, juts snip the nose and change the color of the skin...I use a reddish brown. Here is a closer look.

I am inspired by The Silmarilian and see the orcs as corrupted beings, scavenging what they can rather than these hulking uniform gw/peter jackson brutes. Anything eastern painted black works.

I have had luck with Krylon Plastic fusion primer...but some older ones flake even with that..that's one of the main reason I made them into mini-dioramas so they would stay upright and not be thrown around.
