So I have been looking at this model recently, and I like it, but...

Why is it on a flying base?

Its not a skimmer or anything, it is a basic monstrous creature, so no fast movement as far as I know (just 6" plus run I think?). Plus, it has LEGS!! Its a spider, it has cool looking spider legs...

So why is it on a flying base? I'd prefer to build it standing on its legs, but I'm guessing this is against the rulezzz...

Any thoughts?

They actually float.

The worst part about the base is that it is a ball and socket that barely fits on.

It's easy to assume that people arguing an interpretation you disagree with are just looking for an advantage for themselves... But it's quite often not the case.

Well the model floats... but the rules dont give them any benefit for floating? They are basically a carnifex, or similar

Float might be a bad word, they hover off the ground in the fluff. But MCs already have MtC so...

I think the OP is pointing out, in a way which never occurred to me but makes perfect sense, what's the point of them floating?

They have legs to walk. They don't move quickly. Why not just walk like a Stalker.

I got my first set of Spyders as one of the very few second hand models in my collection, and converted unit 2 into "Canoptek Scorpions" before I even realised they were meant to be flying... So neither of my units have flying bases. Nobody even mentioned it to me.

They float because they're designed to operate inside tombs that have huge wide open spaces with no suitable floor to walk on due to dramatic environment design. It's solely so that they can go from point A to point C without taking a detour round point B like anything that can't float has to. The game doesn't normally feature said chasms in any way that MtC wouldn't be able to bypass (name one game you've played in with a chasm wider than 6"), so there's no allowance for it in the rules.

Of course, the real reason is that floating spyders are cool.

I think theyd look cooler walking to be honest lol. Floating they look a bit silly, with their legs curled up.

I'm sure they could walk if needed. Nothing wrong with re-modelling the model to walk.

But if I could float instead of walk, you'd bet my feet will never touch the ground again!

Unless you had 8 legs to CRUSH YOUR ENEMIES!!!

Or you can waft them with a gentle breeze as you flutter on by...

Much easier to crush your enemies with your eight legs if you're not using four of them to stand on.

Spyders aren't that much bigger than man-sized.

I'm pretty sure that they do use their legs into a tomb. I imagine them floating in the air, high above, to repair something and then clinging themselves to the wall before starting the repair.

My friend's loft is converted into a gaming area and we have a roughly 12x10" square gap in the middle of the table boards (normally with another piece that fits in the gap with an integrated hill) and we have played with the chasm just for gaks and giggles. It does genuinely add a different aspect to the game when you can't travel through the centre of the board.

But yeah, from an in-game perspective, the floating is fairly useless.

I never really thought of it honestly. You would think they should get some sort of bonus besides fluff. I could see them getting something that just doesn't slow them in difficult terrain.

I assume that the "legs" are actually repair/manipulation waldoes.

It is a repair drone after all.

"Equipped with gravity-displacement engines, Canoptek Spyders glide above the battlefield like massive arachnids crawling across invisible webs. "

Because FMC would make them too strong and fast and we don't really have rules for Skimming MC's.
Though it would've been nice if they added Jink to their rules.

Jump FMC is a thing.

A scarab farm that could keep up with itself would be pretty cool, and well worth a points hike.

Would be far too strong, especially given the new formation. Spyders already are quite a good model and giving them Jink would go too far - and wouldn't make much sense either as they are very slow and quite bulky robots.

Kind of surprised they didn't make it Jump or Jet MC.

Sigvatr has clearly forgotten the original "Gravitic Propulsion" special rule from the 3e codex that all Spyders had. Considering their usual worshipping of that codex, I find myself surprised.

Gravitic Propulsion: Tomb Spyders float above the battlefield on ponderous anti-gravity drives. They move identically to Monstrous Creatures.

Oh, I didn't. I was arguing from the current codex's balance / 7th BRB. I actively play 4th and usually field 1-2 Spyders

Well, the rule was pointnless: it was just there to make the fluff/crunch interaction obvious. The fluff for Spyders is: The only bonus they get for floating is Move Through Cover.

That was my poin though - or I'm confused now

I said that they are slow, lumbering floating robots and thus shouldn't gain Jink - and I always understood the MTC bonus in the same way aka not being hindered by rubble, but not fast enough to get more bonuses (well...mostly).
