Hi all

I have the AM codex and I am looking at getting them as allies but I am confused. If I want a heavy weapons team I need an infantry platoon and to have an infantry platoon i need a platoon command squad and a minimum of 2 infantry squads.

So does the platoon command squad and the 2 infantry squads count as 1 troop choice for force org?

Also do the heavy weapons teams have to be placed with an infantry squad or can they be deployed seperately?

thanks all

Yes.
Yes.
Separate unit. If you get the units you mentioned that's 4 separate units you can deploy.

I believe there's an option to combine the infantry squads and platoon command squad, but you'll have to check the codex for details on that.

The best way to think about Infantry Platoons is as a mini-FOC within a single slot: The entire platoon (PCS, Infantry squads and any Heavy Weapons Squads chosen) all count as only a single FOC slot.

They are not required to be in coherency with each other, and are all separate units, like a unit and it's Dedicated Transport don't have to be deployed together or stay together (with the exception of when you use the Combined Squads rule for the Infantry Squads).

just to clarify you can take hwt in CCS, PCS, Infantry squads and veteran squads

Heavy weapon squads are what you need to take a platoon to access. Being an AM player I would say not to get too excited about HWS. They look good on paper, but they are fragile, and are over costed in this codex, (they really need to be base 30 points like sws. You need to take a lot of them to really get done what you want them to do as they are still only bs 3. Most peopel will probably disagree with me here, but IMO the best choice for HWS is mortars, it keeps them cheap, you can put them behind something as to deny the enemy LOS and they are barrage. However, that still puts them 5 points away from a wyvern.

The reasons to take guard as an ally imo are (in no order):

you need AA (hydras)
you need flyers
you want tanks (tank commander makes a really good allied hq choice)
you need cover denial/mob control (wyverns are the best but lemun russ eradicator and hellhound do this well[hellhound is mega over costed right now])
you just need more bodies in your army.

Thanks for the helpful replies.

I think I will get 3 leman russ tanks with 1 being tank commander as my hq and then a veterans squad with either 3 meltas or 3 plasma guns in a chimera and 2 of those veterans forming a heavy weapons team and they will be given probably a lascannon and deployed somehwere juicy on the battlefield

Montain Home, Ar

If you give your vets a heavy weapon, they DO need to stay with the squad, they are not a separate squad.
