Subject: Dipping question regarding High Elves

Hmm, seriously tempted to create a massive all-plastic High Elf army when I return to the UK in July, and having read several online articles about the (in)famous "dipping" method, I would like some advice: This http://www.minwax.com/products/onestep/polyshades.cfm is supposed to be the best stuff to use, but is unavailable in the UK. However, I can bring some back with me, but I need to to know: a) which particular shade? b) Gloss or Satin? c)will I be able to get away with a standard white/blue colour scheme, or would I have to go for something like red/gold to get a decent effect? d)if HE suit this method PERIOD; Cheers! I have other questions pertaining the feasability of the all-platic army... but they can wait for now! Neil

I'll take a crack at the last two: c)will I be able to get away with a standard white/blue colour scheme, or would I have to go for something like red/gold to get a decent effect?
I can't see white/blue working at all. Since Minwax is a wood stain, it would only work for colors that you would normally shade with a brown wash. White/blue with a brown wash would look murky and grubby. So I think you'd have to look at red/gold/brass. d)if HE suit this method PERIOD
Personally, I think not so much, since they're more about bright colors, clean lines and flat areas. The sloppiness of dipping works for gribbly things like bugs and Chaos, but would probably look funny on High Elves. You might be better off doing a modifed dip, where you use a stain, but thin it (with paint thinner) and actually brush it on. That would still save time, but would give you cleaner results. Do a search for "Death Guard" in the Modeling forum; someone did a really nice Death Guard army using this method.

Ronseal Indoor Quick Drying Woodstain works well. I use Teak Satin, but I'm sure other colours would work. Stick to Satin though, as in itself this is gloss enough. Depending on the model type, you can dilute the varnish with water. Sufficiently dilute, the varnish will work on all models, but the more water added, the more like a brown ink wash it becomes. Experimentation is the key.

Dipping makes models look oraganic, so are good for Death Guard Chaos Marines, Kroot, Tyranids, Beasts of Chaos, etc. I have a High Elves army, and I think that High Elves would not work well with dipping.

Dipping is none other than a whole model Brown Ink shade. Any color that is shaded well by brown will look nice dipped. To avoid the shinyness, use matte varnish afterwards. If I was to dip high elves, I would use an ivory off white and maybe a deep green with lots of gold accents and instead of just straight clean white and blue. Even ivory and blue may look good, you may just have to do some highlighting after you dip.
nice bright reds also look very nice dipped
