I'm going to use the Space Wolf psychic power Thunderclap as my example. The power is a Nova type 12" Assault 2D6. Novas obviously hit anything within the bubble of range, and in this case that's 12" but is the 2D6 the maximum amount of wounds that can be dealt to all targets? Do 2D6 have to rolled for each squad hit and that's how many wounds that squad takes? For instance three squads of gaunts are all around the caster with plenty within the 12" bubble of the nova, would I roll 2D6 per squad and deal out a possible 36 wounds if I rolled nothing but 6s?? Or do I have to allocate 12 possible wounds between the units before actual to wound rolls are made?

Each unit would take 2d6 hits.
