shoulder pads, namely.
Hi, I have decided to build a small Black Templar force, and I am struggling with how to do their shoulder pads. I know they typically have the black templar symbol on both pad, but the Black Templar upgrade pack came with some variant pieces and I am not sure when to use what. I know, for example, that the Chaplins use a white Black Templar symbol, while the others use black, but there are variations of the symbol, or the decorations around them. And then others have some variations of the symbol itself. I dont have the older Black Templar codex which would prob be a good source of reference, so I was wondering if anyone could set me straight on what I could/should do with them.
Pics would be a great help! I'll probably just copy what is in them!

This should help:
This does look like a direct scan of the codex to me.

Hi yeah I saw those, but I mean the more artistic ones. Some of them came in this set:
Is there any guideline for why a marine would have more than the normal pad than another?

Traditionally its the left (i think left) shoulder that shows rank and position. The right should is usually where all the fun stuff goes.
I dont think have extra symbols or designs on their shoulder has any significance. It's just extra flair.

Funny, I always thought the opposite:
IF you are right handed the left shoulder pad would be toward the business end of your gun and your right toward your comrades.
Even in this blurry image you can see unit type on right pad and chapter symbol on left, BT same on both sides.
I would suggest you put the "fancy" shoulder pad on the right since that is where the more "informative" side is.

Ah yea, the right shows rank. I had a 50/50 shot at getting it right without looking at any reference!!
But with Black Templar, they dont have ranks. There are no devastators (traditionally) and even on the BT one you can see that the shoulders are identical
So because the BT traditionally do a symbol on both shoulders, feel free to fancy-up either side!

I find where possible, like with the chaplain or sword brethren, matching the two shoulder pads looks quite nice.
You really are able to do what you want, I personally just try to do what makes the most sense... in the FAR future... where magic and daemons exist... with space Vikings... and space elves... who have fighting jesters... and robots that have a fixation with death...
Yeah, do what you want.
