Subject: Just played my first game of X-wing and....

HOLY CRAP is that awesome! A buddy and I both got core sets and decided to play a game. I have never played anything like it and both my friend and I said, "I can see myself spending A LOT of money on this." I haven't been this excited about a game since the first time I played Warhammer 40,000 back in late 2nd edition.
Anyway, we've already started picking up additional ships and expansion packs. We both did come away from our night of gaming with one question which I hope Dakka can answer. Basically, if a ship has a stress token and then performs a green maneuver to get rid of the stress token during the activation phase, can that same ship then perform an action (evade, focus, barrel roll, target lock) immediately after performing the move or is getting rid of the stress token count as the action?
At this point, I have 2 core sets, 1 x-wing expansion, 1 Z-95, and 1 TIE Defender. I'm going to be getting some of everything (or multiples of everything), but is there anything you think I should get right away? I'll be playing both rebels and imperials (and scum when they come out), but I'll mostly be playing rebels while my friend will mostly be playing empire. Thanks for the advice in advance!

Yes, after you perform the green maneuver the stress token is removed and you can perform an action.
There are some other weird examples of "free actions" where having a stress token may prevent them from happening like "Night Beast".
Advice:
Doing well with what you have so-far.
Rebel:
Hard to say, if you like the visuals of X-wing the Millennium Falcon is a bit of a must and happens to be a mean model as well.
A-wings add that heavier speed (Interceptors) and the B-wings are the bombers.
Z-95's are like Tie-fighters, spammed since they are cheap "Quantity has a quality all of it's own."
The X-wings are all-around good and Y-wings are iffy, depends, the turret add-on helps them a lot.
Imperial:
Lots'O Ties... like in the movies, some great characters there.
Tie-bombers add some punch.
Decimator is nasty.
Slave-1 works well and is one of those ships you need on looks alone.
Advanced Tie is a good all around, possibly must.
It really depends on what you are trying to go for in your games.
Competitive, visuals, "historical" playing out, yes to all of the above.
Glad you had fun, I am at the stage that I have all that is released with multiples of what fighters I could get and only 1 of each of the bigger models.
I admit this game has fired my imagination the most lately and is easy for "pick-up" games lately with strangers.

Well, compared to other miniatures games out there you actually wont be spending "a lot" of money on this.
Of course that depends on your definition of "a lot."
For a 2000 point Warhammer/40K type army, painted and ready to play (plus core rule book, Army Codex, templates, dice, paint/supplies AND the time you will spend putting it together and painting it) you could have just about every ship you would need to field any type of 100 point squadron.
Wait until you fly an interceptor with PTL. That is about the funnest ship to fly.

Ya but its easy to spend over £200 on all the ships you want - I've stopped counting the cost
plus the limited availability of certain ships depending the time of year is an irritant & FF always seem to be late delivering there next wave
ill give a tip to all newbie's if you see a ship on sale & you really want it buy a.s.a.p.as next month it might be sold out & you have to wait 3-6 months for a restock
(when I got started I was looking at getting the A wing but I thought ill get it latter but it was out of stock for 4 months)

X-Wing has a lot going for it, and despite how poorly FFG has done with it, still manages an almost cult following. What I mean is an almost total lack of OP support when compared to Star Trek Attack Wing, and constant supply issues- as in, there never seems to be enough. On the bright side though, you have some pretty good looking ships, a strong rule set, and great portability as long as you don't drag your entire collection with you every time you go to the FLGS.
It's a simple game, requires only a little space, and is really fun to play. Their are some "Gotcha!" rules, but overall, I think FFG does a fantastic job with it's FAQ and Tournament rules set. Now, if only they could get some product out there and step up the OP support, then that other game would be left in the dust.

How have FFG done poorly?
-Good Rules
-Good Models
-They will actually patch ships that don't work (A-Wing, TIE Advance)
The only real issue is the supply line, and that kinda like saying "The games's to popular"

Agreed! FFG has done an awesome job. The main problem they have is they have to order in waves, and it takes a few months to get a wave back from manufacturing. I'm hoping they get a second manufacturer now that they are owned by Asmodee Editions.

hi
I think the drip feed of FFG waves are a deliberate ploy to keep the game sort after.
As you can’t get hold of the ship you wanted you wait 3 months. The 1st thing you do when you eventually get hold of it is play it again & again
Keeping the game fresh for gamers
very very clever
its also great to play

FFG's only real issue is its logistics, everything about the game itself is excellent. Hopefully the deal with Asmodee will improve the manufacture and supply issues and the game will go from strength to strength.

Found a local shop that had quite the trove of x-wing stuff so I picked up some things that I've heard are hard to find (A-wing, B-wing, TIE fighter). As primarily a rebel player, I'm having a hard time countering TIE swarms.
My last game my buddy played a TIE Defender and 5 TIE fighters I think (he borrowed some of mine). My rebel forces were pretty limited so I ended up fielding Wedge Antilles with R2-D2, Proton Torpedoes, and failsafe munitions. In addition, I brought airen cracken in a naked z95 and 2 rookie x-wing piots. I ended up losing because I just couldn't do enough damage to the TIE fighters (he played them with alot of evade) while the defender just flew around taking down shields and generally being a pain. He finally took down my last guy (Wedge) and he only had his Defender left. I don't know how I could have played that much better with what I had and he still had his 40+ point Defender pretty much untouched. Any tips?

As long as Asmodee doesn't decide to give the X-Wing line to the same people that make the Attack Wing ships.
IMHO, that is the problem with THAT game...
A popular Universe with a HUGE preset history. Multiple factions with different ships that span centuries of improvements and upgrades. Literally hundreds of ships, Captains, Officers, and Crews that can let you tailor a fleet of identical ships into each being unique and creating synergies all around.
Yet the models are so horrible, so poorly done, that even with the "Star Trek" franchise, its not selling.
Now, if you could use the old SFB ships or at least recreate that level of 'quality'...

Round my way the number of Star Trek players outnumber the X-Wing players at the rate of about 2:1, with one or two crossover players.
The Attack Wing players all acknowledge that the models are god awful, but for them the main advantage is that all the Star Trek models are easily available locally.
We have one local comic/gaming store which stocks plenty of Attack Wing blisters but might only have one or two X-Wing packs in at any given time. That’s not due to any sort of bias by the store owner who loves both Star Wars and Star Trek but he just can’t get hold of as much FFG stock as he wants to.

First thing to do is drop the torp and fail safe. That's 5 points you can spend else where, like upgrading those rookies to blue squad Bs or giving wedge an EPT. After that focus fire on the defender and then try to single out tie fighters.
