I'm not a fan of Apocalypse games where you line up 12-24" away from each other and just roll dice and remove models for 5-6 hours. But, to play a BIG game where maneuver and tactics takes place requires space. The practical limit of reach is about 36": beyond that and you're leaning on the table and knocking over terrain. So, a 6' wide table seems to be the limit.
What about getting rid of the table? Have any of you ever played a game on the floor? I know it's been done, but I'm just curious as to how it was received by players and if they had any feedback afterwards.

That sounds really dangerous to the models and just an all around PITA. Why not double up on tables?

Sounds like you're not playing proper Apocalypse games then. The games I've had, was around 6+ tables put together into a horse shoe and you actually have 2 or 3 fronts to focus on.

I played on the floor back in the RT era, where we didn’t have a table and the local game store didn’t have space to play. It’s doable, just be very careful where you step. Frankly, I’d not recommend it.

i enjoy really big games more than small ones.
i see the small games as the lead-up to the massive confrontation!
i particularly like building up a fluffy army for a massive themed battle - i've done it three times so far; first was a space marine army with a made-up backstory centred around fighting the tau with no projectile or ordinance weaponry and no terminators, jump packs, bikes or ground vehicles bar dreadnoughts.
second was an imperial guard force representing a skittarius regiment guarding a warhound titan on an ork and 'nid infested planet.
third was an Ordo Reductor army when it wasnt a standalone list so i could play out some shenanigans from isstvan 3.
now im doing an imperial knight household with warhound and skysheild landing pad opposed by a taghmata list with only flyers for vehicles in a messy city-fight/titan-extraction.
all that said, the 250000point+ games you see from america do look a bit wearisome. i think all those scratch-build titans dont add well to the overall aesthetic and the 40k system of scoring hits with ranged weapons is clearly not workable for mass titan battles.
when i'm playing a battle involving titans or gargantuan creatures me and friends agree a basic 'supernumeracy' rule for troops and normal vehicles when killed off by them.
i considered at one point getting an old epic 40k set and using the rules from that for inter-titan damage.

The Ordo Reductor - the guy's who make wonderful things like the Landraider Achillies, but can't use them in battle.. |

When I mentioned the 6' limit to table size, I was referring to 6' ACROSS. A normal sized person can't reach more than about 3' across the board. You can make the table length as long as you'd like, but the opposing force never seems to be more than 12-24" away from you at the start of the game. It just ends up looking like two parking lots and a 12" no-man's land before the start of the game. Tactics and maneuver are non-existent.
The floor is not as dangerous as it seems, too. The game space is clearly delineated and people aren't wandering around the board. Basically, the only people permitted on the board is the side whose turn it is to move. And there's not a whole lot of walking, either. Most of the time, you're on your hands and knees if you're actively involved in a phase. And no one wears shoes
