My FLGS is running a tourney soon for X wing and although a good few of us aren't playing the tourney having seen a bunch of the 40k night players practicing their X Wing tactics most of us have picked up the core set to join in!

This weekend I am going to pick up 3 expansion packs as I have got my head round the game itself.

I want to play Rebels just for the fact I prefer them.

I have a fairly good idea of running a Luke/Wedge/Dutch list but as I am not too hot on what cards come with what expansions I can't decide what to pick up.

I will almost certainly get an X wing and Y wing, what would Dakka's suggestion be for the third, not only as a fun ship to play with but also comes with a decent raft of upgrade cards I can play with.

I'd go with a YT1300, you will get a ton of mileage out of it. Plus it has some good upgrades.

I understand there is a good list running that with a rookie x wing pilot.

Yeah, the Han shoots first list is pretty common, basically Han Solo with a bunch of upgrades and two rookie pilots. There are a ton of different builds though. But overall the YT-1300 is a great ship.

It is, but it can also be somewhat dull as your manoeuvres don't matter nearly as much. It really depends on what you're looking for in the game.

Personally I'd suggest a B-wing in addition to an X and a Y. The B-wing is a tough and hard hitting ship with some interesting abilities and upgrades, so it's a solid addition to a starting list.

You could also get an A-wing - however I'd recommend leaving that until you get the Rebel Aces pack, as there are some very useful additions to the A-wing's arsenal in there.

There are various X-wing squad builders online that will let you play around with squadrons - some also list the source of the cards to help you plan your purchases. Unlike GW, FFG don't seem to have any problem with this.
