Subject: Building a semi competitive tyranid invasion force.... Is it even possible? Need some help.

So, now my chaos list is built and in the process of being painted, I wanted to pick a different army of pure evil to build and play with. I'm a massive fan of fluff and story and I adore the way the nids are portrayed. I love the way they invade a planet and proceed to decimate it. So I'd like to build a tyranid list. I have some gene stealers from space Hulk, and I am soon to acquire the models from the shield of baal box. So I shall have around 16-17 stealers and a brood Lord, 3 warriors, and a carnifex. I had an idea of using the broodlord hunting pack to infiltrate that little bit closer (we use lots of ruins) followed up with other models, but I can't make it work in 1500. 2K isn't so bad, but to be an all round, fluffy nid invasion force at 1500 is incredibly difficult?
Currently I'm sat at
Broodlord hunting pack,
Flyrant with TLDwBLW & electroshock.
2 x zoeys,
Venemthrope,
2 x 3 warriors with stranglers,
15 poisoned guants,
Mawloc,
2 x Carny with claws and plasma,
I feel it's too weak. Thoughts? Please help!

Bring more Flyrants, ditch the Warriors and Broodlord Hunting Pack. Toxin Sacs are terrible, take them off the Gaunts. Ditch the Plasma and Claws on the Carnifices.
Warriors, Genestealers, Broodlords, Walkrants, Pyrovores, Skyslasher Swarms, Hormagaunts, Haruspexes, Sporocysts, and TMCs with anything other than TL BL Devs are garbage.
Get some Rippers to use and min troops. Your list should look like this.
HQ
Flyrant (Standard) 240
Flyrant (Standard) 240
Troops
10 stock Gaunts (40)
Rippers (Deep Strike) (57)
Elites
Zoanthrope (50)
Zoanthrope (50)
Venomthrope (45)
Heavy Support
Mawloc (140)
Carnifex w/ TL BL Devs (150)
Carnifex w. TL BL Devs (150)

You use lots of ruins? Lemme into your meta
Regardless, I think that Genestealers might work within your meta because of the ruins. I think I would rather have the Manafactorum Genestealer formation instead, as you can Infiltrate up to 6" and possibly get the T2 charge off, as opposed to relying on reserve rolls.
One thing I will recommend is at least two Flyrants with 2x TL Devourers w/ Brain Leech Worms and EGrubs. Not only are they the best unit in the Codex, if you're gonna take, take two. One is easy to get shot down, two is much, much harder and you will appreciate the mobile synapse.
Sticking with the fluff, I would recommend two Tyrannocytes for Deep Strike right up in the face of the enemy. Up to you what you want to bring, I personally like bringing Carnifexes w/ 2x TL Devourers with Brain Leech Worms. On average, 9 S6 hits is deadly.
Other options include Tervigon for spawning more troops, 20 Termagants with Devourers for 60 S4 shots, Zoanthropes, Dimachaeron...list is long. Tyrannocyte makes a lot of units competitive.
If possible, I would also recommend a Bastion and stick the Venomthrope in it turn one. You can forge the narrative and say the Genestealers have moved on from that building which has already been infested with Tyranids (even model it with green stuffed tentacles to show the advancement of the invasion). From a gamepoint of view, a lone Veneomthrope is likely going to be targetted first turn for easy First Blood, hiding him in a Bastion will make it hard to concede FB (and you can hide your heavy hitting Flyrants behind it too).
Other options included Stranglethorn and Barbed Stranglers (from a Harpy or Living Artillery formation, consisting off 3x Biovores in a single unit, Exocrine and a Warrior brood with either a Barbed Strangler or Venom Cannon). I suggest this as they have Pinning and can re-roll their scatter, so if you manage to pin a unit, you can get your Genestealers into combat easily.

So you're saying just spam TL BL Dev? Sounds boring, and something I'm not going to do. Did you even read my post about what I'll own and what I like?
As for the manufactorum genestealers, the hunting pack gets that same infiltrate ability in ruins if you read their rules....

Fitting a well rounded list into 1500 is often difficult. Thankfully, the answer to "how to build a TAC list" for Tyranids is simple. Flyrants. So grab two and go to town. They also fit into the scheme of a Tyranid invasion, so you just craft a list around them. Out of the vanguard creatures, you have some Genestealers which is good. I would probably keep them cheap and min unit size, which makes sense in the framework of a scouting force.
The real question is do you want to have hordes of gribblies? That is probably what most people imagine from a Tyranid invasion force. And you can do it reasonably competitively in a couple different ways:
1) Grab a Tervigon with a blob of 30 Gants. That will give you a Objective Secured Tervigon which, although more expensive than it used to be is still very serviceable. To support this, if you don't plan on grabbing a forge world Malanthrope (which is highly superior to even two Venomthropes) then I would suggest a second Venomthrope inside the same squad as one just dies so fast if your opponent has ignores cover of any kind.
2) Gargoyles are great. You cannot go wrong with them. They are cheap fast and can tarpit for days
3) Equip some gants with Devourers. They are 3 shots each and you can put 20 Gants inside a drop pod (Tyrannocyte) to throw a ton of wounds out on some poor unsuspecting squad.
For the heavy hitters, Carnifexes are good. As an above poster has said, any Tyranid monstrous creature that can throw out 12 TL str 6 shots is going to be a winner. It's tough to get them into combat fast, but as Tyranids you should be rolling on strategic to try and get Master of Ambush like it's your job. And you'll get it 1/3 of the time.
Mawlocs are spectacular...when they hit haha. Lictors can guide them into a target within 6" with no scatter as long as the Lictor didn't come in the same turn, so that's nice. Single Lictors are also more effective than people think if used correctly. You just have to remember that a Lictor out of cover is a dead Lictor.
Unfortunately for a couple of the models you have (Zoanthropes, warriors) backfield synapse is nice (and until you acquire some more models I would recommend running a unit of warriors) but they have some weaknesses that are tough to overcome. Zoanthropes in particular are just so unreliable
So that's my two cents. I know that most of it requires you to buy some models for it to work but hopefully you were planning on it anyways. That's what I've found to work for me

I have no problem building a full army if it's fluffy and fits a theme. I like themed lists that tell a story. I fear the nid codex doesn't make that easy.

The advice is good, though it may not be in the direction you'd like to head, you have the Spawn of Cryptus? that runs 550 or so, then add aCAD with one or two Winged Tyrants, and some inexpensive Troops and it is all good.
Formation: Spawn of Cryptus, 550? (the combo of Stealth, and Prefered Enemy is tre powerful in a Ruin rich environment)
Hive Fleet "X" has arrived!
HQ: Winged Dakka'rant, Thorax 240
HQ: as above
Troops: Ripper Swarms, x3, Tunneling 45 (baby Mawlocs? Devouerchu! I choose you!)
Troops as above
Heavy: Mawloc
Heavy: Mawloc (everybody likes twins! )
Hmm...280+480+90= 850, + 550...1400 Spend a 100 points (on two Venothropes, use 10 elsewhere) and you have a reasonably capable fluffy force. ( a Malanthrope would be very good as well if you like FW)

I like it... I may adjust it slightly. I'm concerned about its ability against tanks. I play people who are big fans of tanks. My visions of a nid force invading is guants swarming over terrain. I'm not sure what the spawn of cryptus is? Is that out of the baal box? I haven't got it yet? If it's not.... Where can I find the rules for it? It's sounds good, and may be more tempting than the Hunter pack. I feel it needs carnys... God knows. I'm pretty new to nids in 7th. I always picture them as combat gods. But smash in 7th has hit them so so so hard.

Yeah its in white dwarf (or was...) Nids best answer to armor is Thorax hives full of Electro Grubs (Template, S5 AP5 Haywire ) and Carnifexen (D3 HOW FTW! ) most often we "handle" armor by ignoring it, and killing everybody else.
Basicly the "Spawn" is Special Brood Lord (Stealth, PE) Brood of Stealers with Scything
Brood of over kitted Warrior, Stealth, ignore vs Ruins
Carnifex, Strangle Cannon, Bio Plasma (a very odd build) If you take the whole formation, it all gets the Stealth, and PE (Oh, and if you have Stealth, gain Shrouded ) I think it runs 550 It is very specific about gear, so magnets, or total commitment is called for.
I assume it is in the box as well.

It's 555. Just found it on Google.
So I've made a decision. Let's build this list at 2000. I think this gives me the opertunity to possibly fit the fluff in.

Well, as built it is 1400, so 5 extra is no problem, add the twin Venos (I sense a theme...Hive Fleet Janus? ) and you are at 1495.
You are already pretty good on fluff, so you can add in power...twin Zoeys 100, Twin Dakkafexen, 300, second Brood of Warriors? (x3, Cannon) 100 +500, and plenty more anti armor.

I saw someone mention the Manufactorum genestealers and I can second that they are very fun to play. They obviously work best on a board with lots of ruins, and that seems to jive with the sort of terrain your group plays. 350 is a liiitle steep for what you get (5x 5 'stealers) but they are hilarious in the right missions. They are also very fluffy if you are going to run a themed list.

I ran this at 1500 a few times:
Flyrant: 2x Devs, EGrubs
Flyrant: 2x Devs, EGrubs
2x Venomthrope
Zoanthrope
4x 5 Genestealers
Dakkafex in a Tyrannocyte
Manufactorum Formation
5x 5 Genestealers
It's spammy as all get out, but you could drop the troop choice 'stealers for something else. I'm not exactly sure what you can get for 280 points but that's a little wiggle room. Zoan could also be dropped for more points.

Don't sell Rippers short, multi wounds, fearless, and Tunneling. And they are short, so they can hide behind most anything. Add in the fact they are dirt cheap, and you have to give them consideration.
I used to use Winged Assassin with good results, but you'll likely find out as you play the reason everybody uses two sets of Brain Leeches. If you really like it, you can run one with no problem, and later it can move over into SkyTyrant.

The wording on the Broodlord Pack is very unclear. It says "If they enter from reserve they can set up in a building", and then "Alternatively, they can set up in an unoccupied Ruin if more than 6" from an enemy model." I would think that implies if they enter from reserve they essentially DS without scatter into a ruin/building, but it's possible the later part applies to infiltrate too. The main reason I lean towards it meaning reserve entry is that the Manufactorum gene formation above specifies that they can set up in a building/ruins from Infiltrate.

OK, been playing a lot. The list has changed significantly. Not sure it can work. But worth a go.... I hope.....
HQ - Flyrant, TLBL Dev, boneswords, hive commander, E grubs.
Elites - Veno
Elites - Veno
Elites - Zoey
Troops - Terrington, claws, E grubs
Troops - Termiguants x30
Troops - Hormagaunts x15, toxin sacs
Troops - Children of Cryptus
Fast attack - Hive Crone
Heavy - Mawloc
Heavy - Trygon Prime, toxin sacs.
Formations - Living artillery node.
Thoughts? Automatically Appended Next Post: Do you think this is tactically viable? Hold the Trygon and hormagaunts in reserve. Possibly outflank the tervigon depending on mission. The matlock can start and Bury turn one to guarantee an turn two strike. On the board is the children, the Veno's, the Zoey, the flyrant and the 30 guants (may outflank them depending) and the artillery node. I'm hoping that when the Trygon prime arrives the poisoned guants can come up from the tunnel. It means I should be able to get them. To their target a lot more safely.
What do people think?

Outflanking the Trevi, is probably the better choice to 30 guants. Assuming you have one VT hanging with the LAn a mid-field, Childern screened by guants followed by the zoe and a VT will make a solid board presence. You will be in trouble against av13+ and anything that strips cover. But if you can get catalyst on the Zoe and 30 guants your opponent suddenly had to use real fire power to move them.
