Hi guys I have a major problem, I absolutely adore the DKOK but I have no idea what a good colour scheme to paint them in is. I am not a great painter and not a massive lover of the baby blue/ navy blue scheme but prefer dark greys, I also saw a light brown scheme I really liked but because I am a crap painter I feel I really need a step by step guide on how to actually achieve these.
I did my Krieg in blue, steel legion, desert, grey and dark grey and I just cannot get them right, I have stripped them so many times that I fear I will ruin them and I am just desperately trying to get them right.
I quite like the official forgeworld schemes but I want a nice matte look that I see on the miniatures in my FLGS and so far the only tutorials I can find online are the blue/grey schemes.
I desperately need your help to get this right as I love this army and I don't want to give up on it.
I have been painting for a few years but for this treat me as a beginner down to what brush to use and if you can help me I will do my level best to repay the favour. I have ALMOST considered paying a commission paint job but for me my army should be painted by me only otherwise it'll take away so much of the enjoyment.
Any information on doing the tanks as well and specialist units like the quartermaster would be massively appreciated, please guys I am genuinely struggling here.

So given that they're very much inspired by WW2 German infantry, take a look at some historical miniature painting forums for step by step guides, and archive pictures of Nazi troops for inspiration

If you want useful advice you should post some more information about exactly why your test models aren't looking good. Are you having trouble coming up with a color scheme that you like? Do you have a scheme in mind but can't get it to look right on the test models (and if so, what about them doesn't look right)? Are you having trouble with painting techniques (highlights/shading, etc) in general? When you say you want a "nice matte look" do you mean that your models are too glossy (easily fixed with a coat of matte varnish) or do you mean that you want a dull color scheme? Pictures would be ideal, but anything you can post will help us figure out what advice to give you.

WWI infantry, you mean. DKoK are a mix of elements from various WWI armies, so that's a good historical starting point.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
