So, how do I do it? I've been thinking about Abaddon Black, Mechanicum Standard Grey and some Dawnstone, any other suggestions?

It depends on how you want it to look. If you want stark highlights, then your method above is probably fine, but if you'd prefer something a little more subtle, add a tiny amout of blue to your black with each layer. This provides highlighting, without turning the area grey.
