Subject: What to do with my current Necron collection?
|
 |
Lord of the Fleet
|
Been out of the hobby for a while, have yet to play a game of 7th Edition. I've treated myself to a the new rulebook and Necron Codex, but I'm unsure how to go about making a competitive list with what I currently have.
Here's my current collection
1x Overlord
4x Crypteks
25x Warriors
10x Tesla Immortals
5x Gauss Immmortals
5x Deathmarks
3x Wraiths
2x Doom Scythes
1x Doomsday Ark
1x Annihilation Barge/CCB
Ideally, I'd load up on more Wraiths but that's a bit out of my price range for now. I'm thinking of adding either a C'tan or some Tomb Blades to the force, but when it comes to what units to take or how to run the army I'm rather lost.
All feedback is appreciated.

Necrons are still new, but Wraiths are definitely a go to. Tomb Blades have also gotten a nice buff, but C'tans have really been hurt by the psychic random powers.
Honestly, I would look at some of the formations and go from there. From what I've seen, the Decurion formation does pretty well

well I'd run the Doomsday ark and Abarge because they performed really well for me.
Wraiths are a must as they just will not die. I'd probably run minimum troops without some kind of synergy behind it.
Considering you have two crypteks I would absolutely get a Ctan if wraiths are out of the question and run it with God Shackle and Solar thermasite.
Deep strike them, first turn snapfire protection then 8 T8 wounds for your opponent to deal with.
You will need some more stuff by the looks of it, start with the Ctan.

Ok, if I was to begin with the C'tan, where would I find the rules for Shackle and Thermasite? I'm guessing the Exterminatus book.
Would it be best to run the Warriors in one large blob of 20, with a Cryptek for the RP bonus, or just multiple minimum-sized squads?
Also, should have really mentioned this in the OP, I have access to a Blood Angels force (roughly 1500-200pts), as well as all 4 Assassins. Not so fussed about the BA but the Assassins are some of my favourite models, so would including these be possible/viable in any way?

Depends on what you commonly face. I can't imagine a fluffy reason for running assassins with necrons lol.
But other than that, yea a blob of 20 can work but if you get assaulted like mine did by a squad of ravenwing they are going to crumple no matter what. Shot at them repeatedly, got a 38 strong overwatch with rapid fire, didn't kill one!

BA allies wouldn't really add much to the Necrons. The assassins do though, apart from the Eversor - Necrons already have much better CC units than him.
The Vindicare massively outranges the Necrons so he can sit in a corner somewhere and do his thing without interfering with the Necron units. Callidus can deploy wherever so she doesn't need to be near them either. Culexus is harder to deploy without causing problems, but he has decent synergy with the Necrons because he can use the psychic phase warp charges that are otherwise wasted.
If you want fluffy reasons for bringing them, GW created a handy one by putting this in the new codex timeline:
As for your army, you need Tomb Blades to make up a decurion. Those should be your absolute priority.

Vindicares best shot is s10AP1 and we can get that on a large blast with AV13 for only 20p more.

Ok so here's a first attempt at a list.
HQ
Catacomb Command Barge - 165pts
- Warscythe
- Phylactery
Cryptek - 65pts
Elites
5x Deathmarks - 90pts
Troops
10x Warriors - 130pts
10x Warriors - 130pts
10x Immortals 170pts
Fast Attack
Heavy Support
Doom Scythe - 160pts
Doom Scythe - 160pts
Allied Detachment - Officio Assassinorum
Culexus Assassin - 140pts
If my maths adds up this comes to 1215 points. I could add another few Warriors here and there but my main aim for raising it to 1500pts would be to include some Tomb Blades so I have a legal Decurion formation. How does this first list look so far?

Turning it into a decurion would be a big boost, but it looks fine. Immortals are generally better as Gauss now, wouldn't play wysiwyg with yours.
If you play around a bit you could probably fit the Doomsday Ark and Wraiths you already have in that CAD, and it would be a pretty nasty list.

If you add more Warriors, bump one unit up to 15-20, then add a Ghost Ark.
If you had some way to stick a Veil Of Darkness in with those Immortals it wouldn't be a bad idea (either that or a Night Scythe)

I would suggest looking into running those two Doom Scythes as a Deathbringer flight.
Getting an increase to BS for stacking both flyers targeting the same enemy unit is a very nice thing, and it enables you to run other stuff with Impunity, as you have the empty Heavy Support slots.
Other than that, look into Destroyers. As 2W Jet Pack Infantry, they now bring some much needed JSJ into a necron army. 2 units of 3 Destroyers, one of which is a Heavy, will be able to reliably threaten literally anything on the board, pretty much anywhere on the board, and be highly mobile for the trouble of it. These guys very quickly became my favourite unit in the new codex

Seconding the suggestion for Destroyers.
They'd definitely be in my top 5 units, now. (Wraiths, Praetorians, Tomb Blades, Destroyers, Deathmarks, with honorable mention going to Flayed Ones. Make an army out of those units and you'll have the tools required to handle anything)

Best thing about the new book is allot of units are pretty competitive now. If your gaming group run pretty solid lists you can just buy whatever you like and play with that. If they run top tier net builds then yeah wraiths.. Stay away from Ctans though.. just terrible.
FWIW More tomb blades and some Ghost Arks to support your warriors is what I would suggest.
EDIT - Also as mentioned above Destroyers are the shiz nizzle.

I know the C'tans aren't a top-tier unit, but in what way are they terrible? I thought they'd be a pretty effective distraction unit: tough, with some good offensive powers.

His "not psychic shriek" has killed a spawned Gaunt brood of 10, a full strength unit of Venomthropes, and he chopped up an Exorcrine in his first game.
In the second, he bitchslapped a squad of Wraith Guard & their attached Warlock, plus interfered everywhere with ordnance.
The third, he nuked an entire unit of Hellions (10 dudes AFAIK) with the Sky Of Falling Stars
this is in three consecutive games.

Nightbringer's shriek is pretty good.
Ctan's are ok they just die pretty easily. If you are going to walk this big imposing model up the board it will very likely be shot at and die by top of turn 2.

Never used Godshakle, He was only in Formation during the first game.
But in truth, the Crypteks did extremely little. They allowed him to pass the single FNP that was required. Other than that, they didn't do anything.

Good point there.
I have used a Ctan a couple of times and he has performed the best when he deep strikes in around turn 3 to help clean up the backfield. I think it needs protection, it's not a unit you can start on the board and charge forward like wraiths. Is that sort of how you play it?

So I've just had my first game using the list above against a rather more competitive Dark Eldar list:
HQ
Archon - Joined to Incubi
Elites
5x Incubi
- Venom
Troops
10x Warriors
- Raider
- Splinter Racks
5x Warriors
- Blaster
- Venom
5x Warriors
- Blaster
- Venom
Fast Attack
6-7x Jetbikes
- Various HoW upgrades
- Power Weapon/Agoniser/Whatever it's called
Razorwing
Heavy Support
Ravager
This is the best I can remember. Anything I didn't include either didn't come into play or I forgot.
The Game
For my first game in 7th Edition I think I didn't do that badly. I lost the CCB first turn due to a lucky Ravager attack, and I was expecting to be mopped up from there. While Iost 8-4 for Eternal War, I believe I could have done a lot worse considering what I was up against.
The Units
Catacomb Command Barge - Lost it in the first turn, didn't do anything.
Cryptek - Offensively, he didn't do much, as he was in assault before he could get any shots off. However, I think his +1 to RP rolls definitely helped survive the tarpit. While him and the unit of 10x Warriors were eventually wiped out by the Jetbikes, his boost to the unit allowed them to tie them up a fair bit and take them down to 2 bikes by the end.
Deathmarks - Came in later, but as there were only vehicles on the board not much could be done until the closing turns. Did well at mopping up a few Warriors once their Raider had been popped and scored Linebreaker.
Warriors - Just as good as I remember them. While RP may have changed slightly they were very resilient, holding the objectives right until the end.
Immortals - Very good. While these guys were packing Tesla they more than made up for the decreased number of shots in Tesla hits. Would take again.
Doom Scythes - The star of the show. Both turned up on Turn 2, and proved to be a major bother for the opponent. Destroyed his Razorwing, the Archon's Venom (causing him to footslog/hide on an objective) as well as a Raider, at which point the occupants were mopped up by the Deathmarks.
Culexus Assassin - Not so well, although this was down to being up against a non-psychic army. Was a good obstacle, as he was forced to direct a considerable amount of firepower towards him, thanks to his BS1/WS1 ability. Next time I may consider a Vindicare or Eversor instead: He offered me the chance to change before the game, but I insisted to play "as is". It was on my list, so that is what I will take.
My next aim is to get some Tomb Blades, not only for their offensive capability (S6 Ignore Cover Blasts!), but also to make my force a Decurion. I also have a Doomsday Ark ready for larger games, and may consider alternatives to the Assassin.

^ Cheers for the report mate, seems like you have a fun game!
I have also noticed that warriors are allot more survivable in combat and a pretty good tar pit for some things if you need them to be.
