Subject: An Unfair Matchup?

Latest Wrack in the Pits

I'll be bringing Dark Eldar; two 5 man warrior squads a 5 man squad of blasterborn and a Haemonculus with webway portal and other stuff. So about 310 points total, my friend is going to be playing 316 points of nids in a warrior brood using a warrior prime as HQ. My question is this a fair match up? It seems like Dark Eldar have an big advantage here but I don't know any rules but my own so maybe nids have it more even. Should I try to talk him into using something else? Thanks in advance

Yes. He should take a Flyrant and two Mucolid Spores. His list right now is complete trash. Primes are overpriced, and so are warriors.

That seems unfair, especially the FMC. Maybe a regular Tyrant.

Too broken?
I follow this flowchart for Tyranids.
1. Do you have a Flyrant?
Y- Proceed to 2
N- Get a Flyrant. Proceed to 2 after obtaining Flyrant.
2. Are you winning?
Y- Proceed to 3.
N- Get more Flyrants. Return to 2 after getting more Flyrants.
3. Excellent! You are a good player!

The same can be said of Tau and Riptides. Still, at 300 points, a Flyrant is unfair.

Riptides are good, and an important part of competitive Tau, but they're far from the only good thing in the codex and pure Riptide spam is overrated. Meanwhile, Flyrants are singlehandedly the best thing in the entire 'nid codex by about a figurative mile, and competitive nids almost exclusively revolves around maxing out Flyrants (though you don't have to take 5, once you've got 3 then your options open up a little bit).
But, yes, at 300pts, a Flyrant is kind of silly. Granted, it's basically all your points, but it will kill a unit of DE a turn every turn with almost no risk of retribution.

This is why I don't come here to ask if two lists are a fair match-up with each other. Inevitably people say to take the most powerful things in the Codex and leave it at that.

Touche. My point was just that I see a lot of people say "Oh, take as many Riptides as I can" in the same way the Flyrant gets looked at. My other point was that at 300 point games, both units are a gak move.

There is no need to a point balanced army in a friendly game. Just use models you have and do balancing manually. Then you could use those 'trash' units too.

Warrior primes are crazy good in my opinion. I use one pretty frequently and it's rekt face with anything it's touched in CC.

You must be super lucky with cover and your opponents have to use 0 cover ignoring for that to happen. I can't imagine how a footslogging prime with a unit gets anywhere near assault, even against an army like my own.

Because spamming Flyrants is the epitome of skill in Tyranids.
Regarding OP, yes it's slightly unfair as the Blasters will inflict instant death on each warrior. Maybe change the Blasterborn into something else? Failing that you're friend could get a Tervigon or other MC - poisons should be able to handle it.

Ok we'll futz with the lists the day of. Its his first time getting back into 40k for awhile, he seems very excited to have some on to play with, and I'd like not to utterly wreck him with little retribution. I might just run the blasterborn as another warrior squad maybe try and get him to use some Genestealers and a Carnifex or something with a few more models and try to place a lot terrain so his guys wont be instagibbed.

What are the exact lists? We get yours, but I have no idea what your friend is running.
If it's only warriors, then no, it's not fair, because your blasters will ID his warriors.

Yes he wants to use only warriors because his warrior brood is 316 points. I think he doesn't know what DE can do. But I'll try and talk him into doing something else.
