So I'm still kinda confused by all the recent goings on, having just come back into the hobby after a long break and finding out there was a new core rule book.

The question I want to ask is are GW planning to put an entirely new set of codexes to go with the new edition? Or will the current codexes still apply, specifically I'm looking at SM and DA codex, I already own the latest SM codex and am planning to get the DA codex but I don't want to if they are going to drop a new one in a few months. Of course I understand this might not happen since It's been explained to me by GW staff that 7th is more like a bloated errata than a whole new edition.

Has there been official news on this?

You get official news when you can pre-order an item. So, 1 week in advance.

New codecies always come out. That's the downside of playing a game that changes and evolves. Maybe someone else has more specifics but Sisters of Battle are the only codex not updated for 6th but there is no guarantee that they will do it before restarting the cycle. Harlequins was a surprise, but I don't know what comes next. Dark Angels and Chaos were the first from 6th so yes, DA might be updated within six months but the current one still applies for now.

Remember that every codex works until a new one comes out. Necrons just got their's but their 5th Edition codex was being played in 7th even though 5th was very different than 7th in terms of core gameplay.

SoB were updated in 6th with a digital-only codex, so currently every army has been updated to either 6th or 7th.

That said, I wouldn't be overly surprised if next month GW decided to release a 7th edition version of one of the 6th Ed codexes (except CSMs as we all know GW hates them ), however I doubt they'd do such a thing so soon; but then again I doubted them releasing 7th Ed so soon too, and look what happened .

Well I guess it is what it is.

I'll just have to put off buying DA until right before I'm ready to play so at least I'll get some usage out of it even if they announce the new codex the next day.

If you go on rumor sites like Natfka or boards such as these, you'll typically get an inkling a few weeks to even a few months ahead of time. So I'd say buy it, play your army, and enjoy DA if that's what you want to do. Given the blitz to get everyone in 6th/7th I'm not sure we'll see such a rapid update again in the near future. Plus if you go to aforementioned sites you can always eBay your codex for 35 bucks.
