Just started playing 40k orks. I have 30 boyz and would like to know which weapons I should set them up with. Planning on getting a lot more boyz as I go just wonder what i should set the first batch up for?

You won't go wrong with lots more orks, but your first batch, especially for smaller games, should be set up as Shoota boys. It will prevent a lot of frustration. Have fun!
With 30, you could go with 20 Shoota boys and 10 slugga boys, if you plan on getting a trukk to shuttle them across the board (or at least, to try to).

I was looking to go 15-15 but 20-10 sounds a little better. I was told to stay away from big shoota and rocket for them as its a waste of points is that true?
thanks.

Some people find the rokkit useful just to add a bit of versatility to your squad, as random as BS2 shooting can be. Ork players tend to like things that have a bit of chance or randomness to it from my observation. So if you want - include one. If it manages to hit a marine (~32% chance), you'll get it's point back. I would generally stay away from the big shoota as it doesn't offer anything significant for its point IMO.
As this meta favors shooting versus assault, Shoota boys while you're new and have a limited number of Ork boys is advisable. there's some math here if you're interested unless you plan to hurl your boys into headlong assaults each game.

I think the reasoning why not to bother with Big Shootas or Rokkits in units of Boyz is mainly because if they're Slugga Boyz you don't care too much about shooting since you're charging them into Assualt, and if they're Shoota Boyz the couple of extra dice that Big Shootas give are not really necessary and Rokkits are slightly wasted since you're not gonna want to waste all that anti-infantry fire from the Shootas at a vehicle just so you can use the Rokkits (though to be fair they will insta-death Marines with no Armour Saves).
I would recommend that you build the Boyz with Rokkits though, because you can use them as Tankbustas! Tankbustas are really good since every model in the unit comes with a Rokkit and a Meltabomb, in addition to having the Tank Hunters rule (re-roll Armour Penetration rolls). Give them a Trukk or a Battlewagon so they can get to where they are needed and seriously put the hurt on your enemy's vehicles.

Rokkits are good for shootaoyz. I'd stay away from shooty gear for choppaboyz.
Takbustas are really good but don't work all that great while footslogging. See, they're 13 ppm killy orks with 6+ armor. No way your opponent is letting them live more than a turn of shooting at 24' if they're just standing there. Luckily, there are things like mek gunz (awesome) and lootas (i don't like them but people find them effective) who can do the anti-tank duty. Tankbustas work in transports. 15 in a wagon or 5-7 in a truck. Forgeworld transports like big trakk or gunwagon can be also great for them. Especially since they come squadronned.
Anywayz, you got to decide on the army theme first before you expand your collection. There are generally a few main directions to go: footslogging horde, speedfreaks, walker wall. Mixing stuff ain't bad but you got to stick to the theme. For example, if you have a footslogging horde, you can get a truck of boyz or meganobz and it's gona work fine cause they're not taking too many points away from the bulk of the army. But when you got a bunch of footsloggas, a truck, a wagon...you're allready neither footslogging nor rushing properly.

Id agree with the above suggestions, for the first thirty boys go 20 shootas (make a rokit boy) and 10 sluggas. Then when you get a truck you got a good slugga group to go in it.
I've only been playing orks for 6 months now, I've really driven home the footslogging. With just over a hundred boys. So now I am expanding the collection, bikers and koptas are great. MOAR trukks is always good too.

Well I found a slugga boy I got free awhile ago. So I think I am going to go with 20 shootas, 10 slugga, and 1 rocket. I got a box of nobz also since a friend suggest them.
thanks all it really helps me getting started.

I'd build them all as Slugga Boyz, but that's just me and my footslogging Goff tendencies
I've had pretty good luck in smaller point games using a full strength mob of Slugga Boyz supported by a few smaller mobs of Shoota Boyz. Lobbas and Lootas in the backfield and, if the points allow, a small mob of Stormboyz and/or Deffkoptas for first turn attacks vs armor. Warboss with Lukky Stikk and Painboy walk along with the big mob of Sluggas. It's working pretty OK so far in friendly / casual games.

For the Orks, the chainsword thing is just a Choppa by other means - there's no special meaning behind it, it counts the same as the axes and regular blades.

You should use any stabby/slashy weapon you can pillage from your fallen foes.

I have an ok sized Ork army and I have 20 shoota boys and all the rest (about 80) are slugga boys. I have had pretty good success with that. I usually put the shoota boys in a wagon and let them lose. The slugga are mixed foot slogging and trucks, depending on my mood.
