Which is better? The wash that fits your current needs, budget, means of acquisition, etc. It's not just personal - it's situational, even for the same painter.
There's little incentive to mix up your own washes if you only need small quantities in available colors. Pre-mixed, store-bought washes also offer an effortless degree of consistency, in terms of both behavior and coloration.
DIY washes, on the other hand, allow for near endless variation and customization. Want a thicker glaze and a super-thin pin wash? You can do it. Want a warmer grey and a cooler grey wash? You can do it. The startup cost (various colored inks and mediums) is higher than a few pots of name-brand washes, but the price per volume is far cheaper, once you get going. Want to use washes on game boards and terrain pieces? Want to speed paint a whole army without dipping? Either mix your own washes in bulk or prepare to buy out the LGS's entire stock... twice.
I love my old GW, AP, and Vallejo washes, but I still end up mixing quite a few of my own. Some are bulk batches in empty dropper bottles, some are mixed on the fly. Some use matte medium and flow improver, some use Pledge FloorCare.
