Can someone help me out with this easy question (or just confirm I understand it correctly)

Warlord can be any character from any CAD, formation, etc?

Slight correction; the warlord must be chosen from any character in your army. Only if you have no characters may your warlord not be a character model.

Additionally certain detachments (such as an Allied Detachment) may not be allowed to be your primary detachment, which means you may not select your warlord from that detachment.

Not quite correct. Your Warlord can be from any detachment (not just a Combined Arms Detachment) or formation with the exception of the Allied Detachment. Additionally, the Warlord can be any model in the army if you don't have any characters in the army.

Note that some of the named IC are required to be warlords when they are present which can limit the detachments - Azrael for example from the dark angels can not be in an allied detachment!

Well, I am running a list of Chaos space marines with chaos daemon allies. I just wanted to confirm the warlord had to come from the CSM portion of my list.

With all of the changes from 6th to 7th, I am still missing things here and there.

If you're using a Chaos Space Marines Combined Arms Detachment with a Chaos Daemons Allied Detachment, then:

Your warlord:
a) Must be a model with the unit type (Character) in preference to a model without the unit type (Character)
b) Cannot be from the Allied Detachment
c) Must be Abbadon the Despoiler if he is present

Those are pretty much the only restrictions. If you feel it's safer to make a terminator champion of a big squad your warlord than a solo model like a daemon prince (for example), then you're allowed to do so.

Though if he takes a CAD of each then it can be a character in either detachment.
