Hey,

My local club is looking at fun ways to combine large games and small/kill team games. I'm trying to remember this one thing for inspiration.

Back from the mists of time, I seem to remember a White Dwarf battle report with Necrons and Imperial Guard (Mechanised Armegeddon Steel legion maybe?) while Deathwatch jumped in round the back of the 'tomb' to fight scarabs and lay explosives?

Anyone else remember this?/Have any more info?

Cheers!

I've no idea if I still have it, but I regard that as the best battle report ever published, partly for the interesting scenario (Deathwatch had to 'tag' a Necron unit which then had to be forced to phase out so they could follow it) but mostly for the Necron's secondary objective: the Flayed Ones had to kill the IG Commander so they could take his skin, which IIRC was fudged in the end: the Necrons didn't get him, but he failed a morale test and was executed by the Commissar, so they decided to give the Necrons the points for it anyway.

This is really interesting to me, as I have faint memories of this, all I remember was the already stated Flayed Ones hunting mission, but now I remember this, I really want that report back, it was the best, and very imaginative.

It's older than 10 years old.

I know that because I may still have the white dwarf and I definitely haven't bought one in over 10 years.

Haha, amazing, I have what must be 10 white dwarfs left.... and one of them is that one. WD 272.

Lastly, we played some cool games inshore during the third war for armageddon.

We usually had one very large board, with 3 other boards that could effect the main board in certain ways. One of the smaller boards was an IG artillery regiment, the basilisks could choose to fire on their enemies on the board, or fire on to the main table (for this, the rules were, unlimited range but you and to guess the range of the target and then scatter was doubled, so you could fall short by 5 inches, then end up bombing your own troops). Another board that I was playing on was on space hulk tiles, there was my UM and another BT against orks, meant to be underground. Basically both trying to reach 'exits' in the opposing players deployment zone which would result in them appearing on the main board in the opposing teams deployment zone in 1 of three places (it was secret where the locations were, only me and the BT player knew our tunnel exits and visa versa for the orks).

And the last board, I really can't remember what it was. Something that was boosting the orks on the table to balance out the basilisks I think.

Could totally work with kill teams effecting a main battle board though, if there were gun emplacements that could effect the main board with kill teams fighting for control over them as the battle raged. If kill teams were fighting over a tunnel network to gain a 100% reliable deep strike onto the board for in reserve units (maybe make them able to assault off of this also for an added edge). Fight over an airfield that gives boost to fliers in battle.

Thanks for the wd ref - It is available for DL here - please don't post pirated IP on DakkaDakka thanks - Manchu - it is certainly a nostalgia kick and good read (look round pg 90)

Oh and thank you for your kind suggestions. This is the kind of thing I think we want, some big feed in system. Over on WFB we tried a lightning dynamic where one main table affected the rest - but I think this is the kind of structure aimed at.

I just dumped that WD in the trash last week, sorry. It was a good one, they were tying in the kill team and battles, wish they went back to that instead of the goofy battle summaries we get now.

And without the army lists and army overviews it's impossible to understand what's going on.
