Here's what i've got so far...

1 command squad- commander has a PF and BP, the other four vets have flashlights- er, lasguns.

2 "veteran" squads- squad leaders w/bolt pistols. vets have lasguns and 2 grenade launchers, 1 heavy flamer each.

3 chimera's- weapon loadout hasn't been built yet

3 bullgryn w/grenade lobbers & slabshields

i'm starting out small... next up on my list were a couple of melta guys to swap around.

if i were to add to the command squad, should i go with a commisar or a primaris?

and finally, heavy armor- russes or wyvern's at this level?

i have vox's modeled on both vet squads and the command squad, though i'm a casual player so WYSIWYG isn't that big of an issue for me. i'm looking to do around 750-1000 points for now. another thought is to snag another box of bullgryn, stick a psyker with them and then have them lead the chimera's up the board, with the heavier tanks following up behind. any thoughts would be much appreciated- thanks!

Well... here are a few tips i would give.....
1. IF your going gogryn, I made mine out of fantasy ogres and chopped down autocannons for a feral feel.

2. Chaos marauder horsemen make great feral rough riders. Just find something to cover any chaos icons. I used shields which help account for the 5+ save.

3. Wargamesfactory makes decent looking trench coat guys and heavy weapons teams/officers if you wanna go that route. they make great veterans/stormtroopers. and 40k weapons are easy to graft onto them.

4. GW sells melta/plasma guns in packs by themselves. If you get a pack of these and mix them in with the normal guys you can bulk up your special weapons cheaper than buying all metal ones. Also work well with the wargames factory guys.

5. Heavy weapons (how I did mine)- missile launchers fired from shoulders of standing guys. morters put by themselves on termy bases. HB, AC,LC put on horse bases (had to convert stands for 2/3) Guys put on 255 round bases with one pointing and one holding the trigger (remote control firing). I put whatever combination I need for the game onto the big "official" round base. All bases including the big round one based the same.

6. I converted a dakka jet for a vendetta. This because it makes the model stand out from the valkries and is a lot cheaper.

I'm sure I could come up with other things Ive done to save $ but those are whats off the top of my head.
Not going to get into effectiveness of units of what to take or whatnot because thats highly personal from player to player and I dont feel like getting the flamer treatment for sayng the wrong units or whatever by the other guard players.

I'll give my opinion just this once being as you're a recruit and WILL die next firefight!

To be serious though, I like to give my command squads a load of gear - a vox caster is very fluffy for them, and they really do well with special weapons, especially melta or plasma guns, if you do go the plasma route you will find a medipack is worth the points and it makes for a fun, but simple conversion.

Good loadout for the Vets - not excellent or stupendous but it will always be able to dish out damage, you need to be clever with how you use them though.

The basic Chimera is both a good model and can do a good job on the battle field, my GF likes using them as mobile cover when she uses my guard - it is very hard to counter.

Bullgrins are not my favorite - I can't really give you any advice on how to use them.

Both the commissar and Primaris have there uses but the commissar is best with large numbers of infantry (huge combined squads are nearly unstoppable with a commissar keeping them in line) for you a primaris is better and a lot of fun with a smaller force like yours.

Both the LRBT and wyvern are going to cause pain and suffering to those who face you - not a fan of the LRBT I just can't get around the look, the wyvern is good for keeping hordes of anything at bay and can be cheese against versus certain fluffy lists.

so, thanks for the input. this is the list i've put together thus far... clocks in at 983 points.

HQ

CCS
1x HF
1x lascannon team
1x vox/flashlight- er, lasgun (there i go doing that again!)
-commander has a bolt pistol. everyone is wearing carapace armor and camo netting.

i decided to opt out on the chimera for them, because i am going to try and fit an ADL in there to camp them behind. sniper can sit and take potshots at threatening infantry/characters, lascannon can try and deal with heavy armor, and the HF is if any infantry gets too close.

ELITES
3x bullgryn w/grenade launchers & a priest (this unit will screen the incoming vets in chimera's while being buffed by the priest).

TROOPS
VETS x2
3x meltas, 1x vox, sarge has a BP.
-chimera's w/multi lasers, HF, and camo netting

HEAVY
1x LR demolisher w/HF

i want to be able to fit an ADL in there... what would a suggestion be?
