A friend of mine found 2 boxes of boyz while he was cleaning out and said I could have them. While I don't currently play orks, it'll give me something to paint and I wouldn't mind have 200 for kill team or even 500 points worth of them to fool around with in small games.
I had a look over all the ork models, and while not all of them appeal to me (filthy xenos), I do like the look of burna boyz. I've never seen them played and wanted to know if they can actually be any good in small games, or if they'd just be a waste of money. Aside from them I also like Lootas, would honestly like to field an "elite" ork army instead of the usual blobs of green. Is that in any way possible? Will I just get wrecked if I run a 500 point game with mostly lootas and burna boyz in trukks?

Well... Make it a fluffy list and ask your opponent to do the same and it could be really fun you having a BURNA orks and you opponent having something equally as decent (not saying burna orks or bad I don't even know, but it is more fun with fluffy games in small point games). And for an elite army? I really don't feel qualified to say this, but mega armored nobz? Heard they are good, but IDK? GLHF

the low cost of orks gives you an advantage in low point games.
the ability to bring all flamers is nice.
throw in a pipe line and all those flamers gain the torrent usr.
I'm not saying you will wreck face against all opponents, but it would be a fun game.

If brute force doesn't do it, you're not using enough. |

Be sure to buy them a Trukk (preferably with other units similarly mounted). The drive-by or move+disembark 5-template drop forces enough saves that basically anything will die. They are also a great charge deterrant, with Wall of Death from 5 Flamers. And if you buy a box, you get the parts to turn 5 Boys into Lootas (if you use a Big Shoota as a Deffgun), and they are really good!

Burna Boys are pretty good, in my opinion. They all have flamers, which means a mob of 5 in a Trukk can really force the opponent to throw tons of saves which should lead to a couple of casualties.
Their burnas can also be used as two-handed power weapons in the assault phase if you don't use them for shooting or overwatch. Again, grab a Trukk and charge 'em at some beakies and get to slicing!
Don't forget that flamers are amazing for overwatch as well and that overwatch is on a per model basis. Each Burna Boy causes D3 S4 AP5 automatic hits against the charging unit if he elects to overwatch. This means that very few units will want to charge these guys. If you are getting charged by beakies anyway, remember to save a couple of burnas for slicin' - they might just win you the combat.
Lootas are a great support unit. They're pretty good at glancing transports to death or just drowning dead 'ard enemies in saves.
Elite ork armies can work too. The thing is, even the most elite of ork armies will still outnumber other elite forces, unless you go absolute ham and make a nob biker deathstar or something similar. There's nothing wrong with going lower model count with orks though. It'll be a bit more difficult than a mechanized or footsloggin' army since our saves are a bit on the crappy side.

Burnas tend to get shot up early in my meta, as they are so fragile. If they can get in, they'll get a couple of kills on just about anything. The big problem with burnas in vehicles is they can't fire if the vehicle moved more than 6", or if it tank shocked. Such a pity.

You need a Burna Wagon!
Take one Battlewagon:
- add a Reinforced Ram so you can Tank Shock and re-roll Dangerous Terrain Tests
- add 4 Rokkit Launchas or Big Shootas (or a combo of the two) to shoot stuff with
- add a Boarding Plank to increase your Charge distance when you disembark
- add Grot Riggers to get IWND
- add RPJ to add +1" to movement when moving Flat Out
Then take a Big Mek in Mega Armor and outfit him with a KFF and a Boss Pole and what ever else you would like.
Finally, take a 15 Ork Burna Boyz Squad and convert 3 of them to Meks so they can repair the BW (and give them Kombi-Skorchas so they can join in the Burny Fun!).
And there you have it, one mobile, fairly robust and incendiary Ork unit! Best use of Burna Boyz ever!
