Is warhammer worth starting before 9th edition comes out? I already play 40k, and am looking at the models and really liking the look of some models (especially the tomb kings). And am wondering, I have heard some of the rumors saying that everything is leaving and WFTB is turning into a skirmish game. im not good with rules so I would rather just wait, but still.

As a wellspring of positivity, I say yes

We are in great, narrative gaming times and I wouldn't want anyone missing out. Yes, there are changes on the horizon, but there is so much fun to be up up to and (in my opinion) after that change. Pick what looks cool, paint it up and watch your enemies tremble

Since you like TK I'd say no.

Rumours on many sites say they will fold into undead legion and a lot of the thematic choices are going bye bye. Not saying they are true but rit now I advise caution. With the wild rumours and GWs insistence on secrecy many fantasy players are on a purchasing freeze.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

Well, it's either tomb kings or wood elves. Both look cool, but I really like the TK's ushabti. Well, the problem is that I don't like learning rules, and am very bad at it. So I feel that that's my main concern

No GW game is 'worth it' - the cost far exceeds the value and the rules have more holes in them than swiss cheese!

So just collect & paint them if you want. Likely the ushabti are going bye bye. Also Wood elves are being rolled into "elves". That's not to say you (likely) can't use just WE models, but it's a risk that some may no longer be usable.

I'd just hold off until the dust settles. The rules aren't THAT bad and you can always just look up the special rules when they happen.

This is just negativity for the sake of negativity with no helpful insight. He's just angry about the rumors. Truth is, only YOU can decide if it is worth it. That comes down to how much you enjoy playing + how much you enjoy modeling + how much disposable income you have - the cost of your models. Only you can decide that for yourself. If you want to just paint & model, do it! if you want to play you can just play paper hammer, cut up some squares of paper & write / draw what they are & play a few basic games to get a feel. the "corsair" bay (dot) sweeden is your best bet at finding a copy of the rules.

Go for it! Fantasy is an amazing game

If you're going to be playing with friends then you could just stick with 8th if TK are dropped in 9th.

But as Undead Legions will be there, you should be able to continue using your models in 9th too

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

If you like the background and the models go for it. No matter what edition you play or will be playing...the rules will be broken. I've been playing WHFB for over 20 years and GW intentionally screwed with the rules so they can sell models or make us buy new edition. It is a carrot and cart thing.

A company as big as GW can't perfected a rule system in over 30 years, it is an agenda of theirs.

However, I like the models and the game...,in every edition has been fun! Soi play to have fun and collect the miniatures. If you want fun and cool minis...then buy it and enjoy.

Given the magnitude of the rumoured changes I would wait. We don't really know what's getting dropped and what's staying at this point, but the rumours all point to big changes.

For any other factions I would say yes. But for TK and WE, their future is uncertain. If you really want them and have enough money, I'd advise you to stock up on the models you want.
Ruleswise there are going to be no problems. You can always continue to play 8th. 8th is great and a lot of people are likely to keep playing it over 9th if the rumours are true.

Do you have a player base with like minded folks on what you want from the game? If yes, then maybe. Wait and see what this year hold.

If you don't have a player base, no.

There are cheaper, better designed fantasy battles out there, that push come to shove, you can use GW minis if you really want.

I would wait untill 9th edition hits if your planning on playing the newest edition or you could always stick to 8th edition if your TK or WE are removed from 9th.

Built your TK dream army. You will have fun painting it. After that, who care, play or dont play, you will have a cool army.

Are you crazy. GW make THE best models out the IMHO. Especially the fantasy range! Rules are solid if you arnt playing in a tournament setting. Just play for fun!!! That's the way it should be played

If your patient and look around ebay you may be able to find a army cheap. I got a super deal on my Skaven army payed $200 for 4000 pts. I would not go out and buy all new unless you want to put a second mortgage on the house

Definitely wait for 9th and sees what it brings. It would suck to buy a bunch of models only to find out they were erased out of the game.

People in this thread are talking like the rumours of what the next edition brings are all confirmed and corroborated, but they're really not.

To clarify, there is NO firm evidence that either TK or WE will not continue to exist as playable factions going into the next edition. People are just regurgitating rumours that, while coming from sources that have been mostly reliable in the past, are still largely speculation.

My greater concern here is that Ushabti are terrible. Gorgeous models, but very bad in the game. They're much too fragile, much too slow, and much too hard to raise for what they do. With Undead Legions you might be able to make something of it, but this relies on you being able to use Undead Legions going forward (much less clear than 9th, as these are essentially glorified campaign books).

There is ALWAYS a risk of getting into an army right before an edition change, as even small changes have the effect of drastically upsetting the meta. So proceed with caution either way, but be aware that with a little creativity and some modelling tools it is very easy to salvage cool old models into whatever form you need them. I see lots of the (abysmal) bowshabti being used as unit fillers in big archer blocks. Anything is possible.

I don't think I will be getting into them YET.

if I did, it would be the Warriors of Chaos.

The range is less dazzling that it was, the models just seem really small and silly looking compared to the new end times stuff.

My funds aren't that exorbitant, and I love all of the 40K models and fluff a lot more, but once 9th drops Ill see what happens.

My friends at my FLGS play skaven, and beastman maybe (I can't remember now), and I have looked at thier games, and have seemed really lackluster compared to the ridiculously unbalanced fireworks of 40k.

But really thanks, I don't mean to spread hate with my thoughts on 40k, but sadly, it seems that you guys kinda get the short end of the stick when it comes to new releases (might be because of my isolated taste in GWs webstore)

happy wargaming,

There does not exist any model sillier than the chaos stuff from the End Times.

Progress is like a herd of pigs: everybody is interested in the produced benefits, but nobody wants to deal with all the resulting gak.

GW customers deserve every bit of outrageous princing they get.

I think it's worth starting. I am restarting after a hiatus and right now I'm just picking up models not worrying about the rules.

It's not worth starting right now, wait for 9th edition.

There is no point starting with 8th ed in mind then having things change for 9th. Just hold out for 2 months.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

In my opinion just from a standard outlook with no knowledge of the game, if you REALLY want to buy stuff buy things such as skellys things that could be proxied or are so basic they will in some form be certain to be in 9th.

Similar question but replace TK with beastmen.

Found some for real cheap. Wondering if I should re-base them for 40k (mutant rabble and cultists) or keep them square for fantasy.

Or hell, re-base them and then use them for fantasy when it becomes a skirmish game...

I love WHFB and I love my Skaven. No matter what happens to them in 9th, I will still play them, even if they get stuck under the Chaos umbrella... which will make me vomit, but I will still play them.

That being said... based on RUMORS ALONE, I would hold off. The rumored changes (even if some of them are true) promise some pretty big changes, and the game and your chosen faction COULD POSSIBLY morph into something you might regret buying.

The figs will still be there when 9th is released and you've had a chance to absorb it.

Has anyone confirmed 9th IS or IS NOT going to round bases? If that is still a possibility, that alone would be reason enough to hold-off, in my book.
