Are they still super secret buddies? In my last Necron Codex there was a small tidbit about a Necron force helping the Blood Angels defend against a Tyranid invasion, but in the new codex it's seemed to disappear. Sorry if I'm getting anything mixed up, I'm a little new to WH40k.

Recent fluff suggests it.
The whole Blood angels release before christmas and the leviathan and exterminatus supplements were based on it, however i haven't read either so I don't know how it ended.

They were never "super secret buddies". Ugh. They fought together to avoid being annihilated by Tyranids. Then they decided to leave each other alone as a sign of respect. It was a one time thing, and while I'm not thrilled about it, it's not as bad as some people say. And this comes from someone who finds Matt Ward a very poor writer, generally prefers oldcrons to newcrons, and loathes what Matt did to GK's and Ultras.
As far as I know, it's still canon, although the lack of explicit mention may be due to the backlash and memetic mutation it received.

Is there any media that I can read that explains the situation more in depth? Or any media that has the Necrons as a large part of the story after the fluff change to them? I read the Fall of Damnos, but that seemed to be the early Necron fluff. I do like the early fluff, but I want to be up to date with my army.

There is an ebook called Word of the Silent King that explains the meeting between Dante and Szarekh as well.

That's actually the second time they've fought Tyranids together. The first time was on Gehenna.

i am with you fallinq...
the overreaction to the one time alliance was massive...
i was just reading that section in Exterminatus...
one interesting thing is that Dante doesn't trust Anrakyr any further than he can throw him, but he knows that, even with the Necrons' help, they will not be able to kill all the 'Nids...
that is how enormous the hive fleet is, and how desperate the situation...
given the danger that the 'Nids pose, why not chuck some metal men down their throats???
it is bound to cause some serious indigestion ...
i am enjoying how they are fleshing out this incident...
cheers

It has happened twice now. The first was the one everyone already knows, the Blood Angels and Necrons were fighting and the Tyranids appeared so they teamed up to fight the Tyranids. The Shield of Baal alliance is the second time.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to have to check all these out. Are there any true allies of the Necrons at all anymore?

Actually, Shield of Baal makes them out to be actual buddies. Or at the very least, the Silent King wants to ally with Dante, but Dante does not return the feeling.

@Orblivion: i was talking about the reaction to the first time around, in the last edition of the BA Codex, when agreeing with fallinq...
that moment was what i figured he was referencing...
there doesn't seem to have been much backlash to the Exterminatus fluff...
@Wyzilla: i was talking about Dante's perspective...
he does not seem to trust the Necrons...
he just seems to understand that it would be silly not to use them, and what they bring to the table...
cheers

My Army needs more friends... The only game I played where I could work out the alliance was when I was playing a 2v2 with 'Nids on my side. I chalked it up to the 'Nids didn't care about my necrons because they had no biomass.

The best ally for a Necron is another Necron.
That said, the ultimate destiny of all living things is to become a slave to the Necron Empire, so really, letting them believe they'er merely allying with you for now isn't a huge imposition, is it?

That... actually is one of the greater archenemy-thingies out there right now. Basically Necrons hate Tyranids in general because Silent King, before his self exile - decreed that all Necrons should find a way to return to flesh bodies with souls. And if Tyranids nom all the biomass, there won't be any flesh left to go back to.
Which actually somewhat makes sense with the Blood Angels + Necron buddy buddy duo cops fluff from the last Codex. The Crons wanted to kill bugs than Blood Angels and Blood Angels seeing how Newcrons would be reasoned with, actually somehow formed a temporary ceasefire. I always imagine it being more like.... "lets point our guns in the same direction before getting back to pointing them at each other" kinda situation. Afterwards, both were pretty darn tired and didn't quite feel like slugging it out again. And on the Blood Angels part (woohoo Sphess Marine honor) they didn't feel like fighting against "allies".
Newcrons make the Crons somewhat similar to the intelligent, "reasonable" factions like Eldar, Imperium, etc in the sense that they sometimes reply in words rather than Gauss weapons. And can sometimes develope a sense diplomacy or alliance, depending on the situation.

The Bloody-Cron alliance is a classic 'Come the Apocalypse' situation. I'm reasonably certain other chapters have done something similar in a pinch, it just hasn't been confirmed by GW fluff.
My two cents.

Indeed, and SoB really is apocalypse-level stuff. The Cryptoid Tendril is so massive that causing a system-wide explosion kills less than half of it.
The short story "Words of the Silent King" quietly suggests that the Triarchs manipulate Anrakyr into assisting the Mephrit and the Blood Angels, so he could still be the driving force behind the entire thing. Anrakyr himself (and even more so Zarathusa) are not keen on the idea at all...

The Word of the Silent King short story also alluded that Szarekh met Sanguinius during the Great Crusade era and offered to form an alliance. Supposedly he did this because he foresaw the coming of the Tyranids and thought that allying himself with the Blood Angels would be his first step in creating a solid bulwark against them. Sanguinius didn't accept the alliance but he apparently didn't rebuke Szarekh too bad, since the Silent King apparently honors him by having a Sanguinius Death Mask in his possession. He also mentioned believing that "if any human was worth mourning, Sanguinius was".

Yes, but it's highly likely he was making things up, since everything else we know has him outside the galaxy during the Crusade and Heresy eras.

Possibly, but even his inner monologue implied that they really had met at some point. He thinks to himself that humanity probably would have been better off if Sanguinius had survived and become the new leader of the Imperium.
