So i love this army and want to start right away! My only thing is... Im not a huge fan of the helmets (Egyptian-ish one) Would it be totally out of fluff to build them with the standard chaos tac squad helmets?

How can you tell they're Thousand Sons without the helmet?

Yes. They were all trapped into their armours when Ahriman used the rubric spell.

Thousand Sons are modelled like that to be distinctive. If those helmets aren't your thing, here are some alternatives you may prefer?

If Egyptian isn't your thing then that's obviously fine, though people may tut at your standard-looking marines next to your other standard-looking marines. At the end of the day though, these are your models and you can do with them as you like!

If you're that excited about them but don't want to take the Egyptian helmet thing too far, then maybe you can model them on their pre-Heresy look? I think fluff only states they were trapped in their armour, not that it mutated to make them look even more Egyptian.

And it seems like only Librarians had the Pharaoh hood thing.

In that case you could have the bulk of the army look more like standard CSMs or SMs and find other ways to make them look distinctive (colour scheme, banners, icons, etc), and use less horns (or maybe their armour mutated that way). Or maybe just play a Thousand Sons warband that's slightly different and customize them.

Looking at those Heresy images, could maybe go to MaxMini and ask them politely to give you specifically a bag of the helmet on the far left of this set:

Do your Thousand Sons however you feel like. The Egypt hats are the iconic look, but it's also kinda silly. Khorne Berzerkers are still Khorne Berzerkers without the rabbit ears. Their helmets don't get as good of UHF reception, but there's a tradeoff in everything. They also don't get caught on low hanging branches and pipes as much either.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

^ Yeah, all of those helmets are pretty great. They might not look like the typical Thousand Sons right away but they'll definitely look unique compared to other CSM armies. And your army would have a 30k feel to it.

I modelled some Khorne Berserkers for a friend once as a favor, and he asked me to remove their bunny ears. They still looked amazing and were readily identifiable.

You could easily do the same for your Thousand Sons. Or you could just give them standard Chaos Marine helmets. Just give them a look distinct from the rest of your marines and you should be just fine in almost any setting.

I always say, anyone who would quibble with you about something like this before, during, or after a game is not someone you want to play with anyhow.

The thing is, Khorne Berzerkers aren't all World Eaters, but all Thousand Sons are theoretically Thousand Sons. Just another problem of being the only Cult Troop that retains is originating Legion name...

If you are going for a chaos army, you can pain them blue and gold and call them thousand sons. If you don't like that color scheme you can run red and gold and call them original 1k sons. IF you hate the Egyptian stuff, you could field a "warband" that is mad up of former 1k sons who also disliked the Egyptian Motif and wen with something original. That's the beauty of Chaos, nothing has to look standard.

THe best part of that? The Rubrics don't get a say in the matter, so if some random Sorcerer (Thousand Son or otherwise, so long as they can figure out the psychic commands) decides to repaint them or file off their crests, they just stand there and take it!

He does! They kinda look like extra arms though. His larger left arm seems to be visible. Maybe it's just cause he's doing some sorcery stuff. Looks pretty creepy.

The 'Egyptian Stuff' is what makes them a legion to me. If you're more oriented on the rules of the army, then make away. As it was said, these are your models and you can go wild with it.

Yea, that's what I always assumed when I saw that picture. Unless the artist has some weird problem drawing arms. They're really just way too short to be his actual arms. Squiggly little things.
