So I am down to choosing one of two lists for my first moderately competitive tournament.

It is a Highlander event, so other than troops, or dedicated transports under 100pts, no item can be taken more than once.

My main concerns are people bringing some serious jink-reroll-invisibility super-combos, and bypassing the restrictions of highlander, in a sense, by bringing WS spam.

I like the later list a lot, and it has performed well, but forcing the Knight in there, and making it under 1500pts, means almost every other squad is a minimal, foot-slogging, unit, with no durability, and essentially no meaningful contribution other than back-field objective holding. The first list is better balanced, but I worry about losing my Knight crutch, in case my opponent also brings a super-heavy.

I reckon the first list would be a lot more fun to play with for both you and your opponent, because going barebones just to shoe-horn in a knight seems very boring, and also putting all your eggs in one basket. I've seen knights go down very quickly purely because people were expecting them, and lists that were prepared for knights didn't do so well against more balanced armies

Aye. Ignoring them. At 1500pts, Highlander, at least in our local meta, you will MAYBE see one flyer, or in most cases, none at all.

In fact, our local meta skews HEAVILY toward bike-deathstars (be they Eldar, or SM), with characters, psykers fishing for Invisibility, etc...

If you take SoB, and dominions, make sure you smoosh them into an Immolator. Twin linked multi melta scouting with a payload of four more meltas that might ignore cover? Very much yes. And on that type of unit, sometimes its worth the 10 points for the laud hailer just to make sure the AoF works.

Yeah, be careful about those knights. I play orks, and in the last six games I've played (three in tourney setting) I faced 8 knights. Wrecked them all, including a first turn pop with tankbustas. People come expecting them, so they often have units whose whole purpose in the list is super-heavy hunting.
