I am playing against a friend on friday, and we are going to be rolling for a maelstrom mission. This is the list I am planning to take.
I am planning to attempt to hold a large number of objectives by splitting up my forces. I hope the resiliency of my army will slow him down, while I can use my big warrior squad (which will be joined by the cryptek and d.lord) to deny the center of the board.
The destroyers will try to hunt his riptide and suits (ap 3 will tear the crisis suits apart).
The wraiths will attempt to flank, hopefully drawing fire, and maybe managing to close into combat with some of his suits. Alternatively if I see he is fielding stealth suits, or has many units to deep strike, I will use them as hunter killers.
I originally made this list as a lychguard bomb, but I just don't think I will be able to reliably close into melee against him.

You're right. I am worried about running the warrior swarm without the cryptek because of the pie plates. I could run the cryptek without a formation, or I can drop the cryptek and some warriors for a ghost ark and a night scythe.
I am new to the game, and my list making is weak.

If you run the Cryptek on his own your list becomes unbound so you lose the Decurion benefits (though keep the individual formation benefits).
For me the Canoptek harvest is not bringing much to the list. I would drop it and drop the 19 warrior unit down to 10. Then get ghotarks for both warrior units, get shield vanes for the tomb blades and spend the rest of the points on heavy destroyers.

I definitely wanted to do some sort of bomb when I originally made this list. I was checking out the flayers and they seem pretty interesting. I could deepstrike them with the veil, and put the d.lord and the lord out front to soak some of the first hits.
This list seems to have a lot more of the disruption and split fire that I was originally going for.
The lord might get left behind at first, but he will catch back up, and I doubt that the tau player will focus fire him with so many flayers running at his back line.

So on the new list, you are planning on putting the OL and DL into the flayed ones, and deep striking them across the board?
Tomb blades will be very good at huinting fire warriors with the ignores cover, and ap4.
Do you need ot worry about riptides? I dont see an answer for them here other than trying to get them into melee with the assault blob.
I'd drop void reaper, get a normal warscythe on the DL, and buy more flayed ones. max out the blob or go home, since your win depends on it.
Know that the tau will undoubtedly shoot everything they have at your assault unit, I'd try to do some math to see how much you will have left to work with on your turn, unless terrain really helps block LOS. (Drop on a flank)

Get the Dlord the solar staff to help with surviving the Tau shooting phase. I don't think that riptides cause this list a particular problem, they are one of the few things Wraiths can actually reliably kill in a round or two particularly if you give them shred.

Don't the vast majority of the Tau have black sun filters? I avoided the solar staff purposefully because of it.
I am now also looking at deep striking the wraiths instead, and running a larger harvest unit.
Yes the OL and the DL will be joining whatever deep strikes with the veil.

Yes they have BSF, you're not using the solar pulse for night fighting. You're using it to force snap shots. Automatically Appended Next Post: I wouldn't use Wraiths as a mainline combat unit. They are a fast tarpit and don't need the viel. Flayed ones and Lychguard are the best bet for a DS shock and awe unit.

Cool. I definetly misunderstood the solar staff rule.
Since Tau has no close combat units, is it worth bringing the wraiths?
Should I be worried about my LG/Flayed Ones making it into assault vs Tau?
