Welcome to the Hive.
The Flyrants are good. I would skip the Hive Guard and buy the Venomthrope/Zoanthrope box, then make one Venom and two Zoans. You really want a Venomthrope to protect your bugs on the first turn.
Hive Guard are not that great. They only have BS3, so they miss half the time. They are expensive (both dollar-wise and point-wise) and don't add a lot to the army that it really needs (you can get ignores cover from your e-grub templates, for example).
Zoans are fine, but not that exciting without some ground bugs to pump up. If you want to run them I'd include a second Carnifex.
Tyranid Warriors are okay but not that good outside of the formations. On the other hand, if you are going to run Warriors and Exocrine, you should also look for 3 biovores so you can run the Living Artillery Node formation. That is a great formation - re-roll scatters on the blasts from the biovores and Exo as long as they are within 12" of the Warriors, plus all their weapons gain pinning. Biovores in general are an all-star unit whenever I run them.
You might want to look into buying some Rippers. Six Ripper bases are easy and cheap to find on ebay, and fulfill your troop requirements cheaply while providing good OS scoring, as they can be upgraded to deep strike.
I also like Gargoyles and the Hive Crone. Gargoyles are a real pain to paint and assemble, though.
Once you've got a basic army built, consider getting the Malanthrope from Forge World. He is like a Venomthrope on steroids (T5, 3+ save, 4 wounds, regen built-in, plus the shrouded aura), but it is a pricy model so I would just get the Venom/Zoan box for now, as it actually costs more to get just the Malan as it does to get three of the other models.
Edit: oh yeah, and put electroshock grubs on any unit that can take it, but especially on the flyrants. Having access to a haywire template is almost always useful, plus it is actually a pretty good flamer if you're facing troops in cover.

Dang good advice!
If you want to run Nuerothrope Broods, look at grabbing a Tyrannocyte (?) so you can "pod" them into range. Pods are dang useful for getting a Big Bug into position as well, so you'll find plenty of use for a pair of them, more than that and you kinda become a "Pod army" and you lose options.
More generally Nids tend to do best when you keep the cost low, and put more figures onto the table. Even if you are going "Nidzilla!" having a screen is gosh darn useful, and lets you handle Maelstrom with ease.
