I've been thinking about this for some time now... 7th edition is around for a while with Dark Vengeance still around, and it looks like campaign sets or whatever they are called are the new way of getting unique models and mini-rulebooks. Have there been any good rumors about new starter set on the horizon? Or are the campaign boxes the new black? And are they any good?

I loved AOBR and DV, and I have problem acknowledging the existence of 7th edition without a proper starter set around

DV IS the starter set, they updated it with actual rules for 7th.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

The campaign books might not be starter sets like Dark Vengeance still is, but they are a step up. I don't know about you, but I don't want my Chosen to be so scatterbrained that the unit is unusable, but, I don't get that choice with the snap together DV models. Deathstorm gives you a booklet on how to build the models, the needed codex material to run the models in the way they they are shown to be built, but also the option to ignore that completely and build them however you like. So yes, they're very good. And they're not JUST for new players. Any one in the hobby can get something from buying the set.

Acknowledge it or not, 7th has plenty of starter and intermediate sets. Dark Vengeance, Stormclaw and Deathstorm are all ways to get folks into the hobby with big savings. We can make do with that.

Its too bad that Stormclaw and Deathstorm were limited release,

But yes, 7th edition has THREE proper starter sets.

Yeah. but the campaigns are also intentionally limited edition, and serve an entirely different business function from starter sets like Dark Vengeance.

The answer was given above. DV was updated for 7th, so it's still the "starter" kit. I think it's also likely to be the pattern for any starter kits going forward, in the style of its models and the factions chosen to be represented. My guess, given the way DV was released, is that AoBR was too successful. That sounds odd, but what GW wants to sell are higher margin items like their Tactical Squads and Terminator Squads and Ork Boyz. A set like AoBR was producing higher sales but lower profits because of all the wasted material (dice, templates, rulebooks).

DV's relatively lower sales volume is probably exactly what GW wanted from it. It's not being aimed at the existing hobbyist. Now, whether or not that tactic has led to a corresponding rise in the sales of the multi-part equivalents is a different story, but I can almost guarantee that was what they were trying to do. GW has been pretty consistently opposed to the idea of attracting the budget gamer and opposed to the idea of discounting to attract sales. It's unlikely they were going to produce another AoBR where everything in the box was generic and easily usable by any Space Marine army.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

I bought Black Reach when 6th was about to drop bc I wanted the Ork models. I bought Dark Vengeance bc I wanted the Chaos models. I would have bought a starter for 7th if it wasn't Dark Vengeance 1.1, and passed on the campaigns since they had nothing to offer me anymore...

I'm hoping that Chaos gets a campaign pack. But with 2 supplements already, I don't think they will be getting much attention in the near future...

I like the campaign sets. they give you actual model sets where you can use the different options, give you the rule book. I see the only difference as not having the templates (dont remember but maybe not the dice. Those of us who have been around will tell ya templates and dice are so easy to come by, we usually have extra spares we would GIVE a newcomer (I have many times) or understand that they are pretty cheap.

I'd love for more campaign boxes to come out. Actually, I really like DV too and I hope that the next starter box that comes out has armies that I play (I'll probably buy it anyways). But as for generic boxes like AOBR, I don't think they will produce anymore like that. It'll be a specific space marine faction and a xenos army

I can't speak for the other recent stuff. The shield of Baal stuff is great for small, technically unbound games. It's a nice start to an army (unless you're specifically going for a tournament list), with a good variety of units. The 'nid stuff isn't a terrible start to a 'nid army either, though 'nids as a whole have a few issues. But no 'nid starter army is going to be "competitive" unless it starts with a flyrant. ^_^;

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

2 Flyrants. And a knight.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.
