Unfortunately, due to my schedule, I can normally only play 40k about once every week or two. Was supposed to play 40k tonight but my buddy had to cancel (him and his kids were sick) so instead I'm home modeling. What do you guys do when a game falls through?

I don't know if this is a trick question or something... but "do something else" comes to mind

play computer games, paint stuff, stare at the wife until she is really uncomfortable

I know the feeling. I got an airbrush last Xmas, that helped getting me going on some other stuff. I painted my Dark Heresy character. Yay!

Paint, watch other people's games, help with rules questions, play something else, browse the internet through my iPad (since I need that for my codex anyways), read codexes, flip through supplement books for army ideas...

I basically like to have a list of options and use them all.

Another thought, though it doesn't solve the immediate problem, is create a small league of six or so players. Then if a few don't show, the games still happen. Odd number? Have two people shave a few points off, have a third add a few and do a 2v1 match.

In short, see if you can plan for plans falling through.

There aren't always 40k players at my store, but it's guaranteed that someone is out there playing some game. I've picked up some of the cheaper stuff like heroclix that I always keep enough in my car for a game, and I picked up a precon Magic deck, commander format.

Oh, no one can come out for 40k tonight? See what the Clix guys are up to. They have an even number or aren't playing that night? There are always a handful of guys picking up Magic cards that are up for a game.

It helps that I hang out at the store a good bit (usually stop on my way home 2 or 3 nights a week when I'm not busy), so literally everyone that comes in knows me and that I'm cool to play anything with. Heck, even if you don't play any of those games the store owner always has some test copies of new board games that he'll let me borrow (mostly deckbuilding stuff, and tried out a bit of Dead of Winter the other day).

If you're 100% set on a game, I'd head down to the store. If not, I'd go to the gym.
