I was wondering which type of loadout was preferable for Boyz these days. I know that in a Trukk, sluggas are preferable to compensate for low numbers, but outside of that I am lost. Is it better to get sluggas for a 30 man horde with Painboy, or Shootas? How about 20 man squads? I'm just having difficulty figuring out which one to choose...

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

I have about 50-60 shoota boys. I have roughly 190 slugga. When I use shoota boys they are in trukks. So I only need around 10 anyway.

Depends dude, it all depends what you are trying to play at. The point is to get your boyz across the board and into your opponent's forces as soon as possible. Trukk is fragile, prone to explosion, take 'eavy armor. Wagon is more durable, stuff it with 18 'eavy armor boyz, 1 nob and painboy for maximum tarpit. Sometimes I run 12 boyz in trukk with shootas as mobile gun platform or as ready reserves that travel behind the main advancing wagon train. If you want distraction run boyz with trukk and PK, run like 4~6 trukks, gives your opponent many things to shoot at and worry about. Or you can run two 20 boyz unit in wagon. It is better not to run boyz on foot, unless you are running green tide or similar formation.

I think if you're taking bare min shootas in trukks, put em in terrain, and then objective secure with the trukk

Thats a very different style from the normal boyz b4 toys approach tho.

Mass amounts of boyz? sluggas imo. Smaller amounts or only a few huge squads? shootas.

Technically you want both. But in the end, slugga boyz because the new WAAAAGH! rule lets them actually get in combat fairly quickly even if footslogging.

Usually i bring a unit of shootas for every 2 units of sluggas and the shootas go up front. The dakka they offer is very good, but i find after that initial turn or two of shooting they start to fall off and i reaaaaally wish i had the sluggas. So i started both lol

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

You are playing orc horde with sluggas, cause they are cheeper.

You are not playing anything else.

Sluggas for mounted.
Shootas for foot.
Unless it's Green Tide, then it's Sluggas.

That's what I generally go for

I field both.

30 of sluggas with pk nob + warboss + painboss
30 of shootas with rokkits, pk nob and Grotsnik + Wierdboy - in case i get deepstrike
20 of shootas with rokkits, nob (sometimes with pk) for footslogging
10-12 of sluggas with pk nob for trucks
10+ of shootas with nob for footslogging when i've got leftover points enough for just a bunch of guyz or when i need a mandatory troop for second cad and i'm short on points.

Depends on my army type, smaller units of shootas or large units of sluggas.

Slugs for trukk boyz and shootas for boyz on foot. I normally run 20-25 model boy squads.

shootas in 12 man trucks sluggas on foot and in 30 man hordes

sluggers all the way all the time unless you want 20 shooters in a battlewagon. if your in trucks, sluggers coz they want to get to combat and on foot, sluggers coz you want to run with them which will waste any shots you would have had from shooters.

You know what. I voted shootas and have played shootas in most of my games. but i have come to realize that shoota boyz dont mesh well with the WAAAGH rule.

Because you move, run, charge with that rule. whereas without the waaagh, you would instead shoot before doing that charge.

So I may be reconsidering and switching to sluggas. If I flatout my three battlewagons on turn 1, thats 18 inches. Turn 2 call a waagh, move the wagon 6, boyz disembark 6, then get a run move and then get a charge with 'ere we go. That should get you anywhere you need to be without shooting at all. That's an average of 40 inches.

But I have grounded so many FMCs with snapshooting shootas that i seem to keep taking them based on those prior performances.

I like both equally, tbh.

Shootas are the more versatile choice by far. But... The combination of 19 sluggas and a warboss with da lukky stikk is insane.

I prefer both, but would rather footslog Shootas and throw Sluggas in Trukks. Their smaller squad size is made up for by their extra attacks, and I feel I get more out of the Shootas by letting them walk up and get a couple rounds of fire before they charge in.

Edit:
The other issue is that 6th / 7th is extremely unforgving to assault troops. Overwatch is pretty harsh on Orks.

I think Shootas also have more of a place in a walker wall and sluggas for speed lists in transports.

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

I think this is the best way to look at it.

Footslogging = shootas
Speedfreaks = sluggas

I agree, but at the same time, you will have to sacrifice the shooters shooting for a run if you need to get them across the board

and in some cases, you may want shooters in speed freaks if they dont want to charge and you want to just have a high mobile shooting unit.

I think it really depends on what kind of list you are creating

Just a suggestion, if you're using slugga boyz in a truck and you know the truck will be a fire magnet, give your boyz 'eavy armour, otherwise they'll fall back off the board or be killed by the nob of the lot.

May not work for you, may be a stupid idea, but it works for me. Sometimes.

The armies that I collect:

- Tyranids, 2,000 pts.
- Orks, 1,250 pts.
- Tau, 750 pts.
- Guard (PDF), 750 pts.

(Yes I have a thing for horde armies to some extent)

I... actually don't know. Help?

I'm using Slugga Boyz, but I've been pondering with the idea of doing a drive-by shooting with some Shoota Boyz in a Trukk...

Now that's what I have been doing. but using battlewagon drive-bys. With 2 big shoota boyz in the group.

thats a total of 36 S4 shots, and 6 S5 shots. all within 18"
While yes they are hitting on 5s. the sheer amount of shots is nothing to sneeze at. Even if I go cruising speed with the wagon I can cause some wounds. But recently I have been planning about just going flatout with the wagon the first turn, then unloading, calling waagh second turn and charging.
