Hey guys,

Last night started to sculpt up some Grotesques for my DE. They are on a 40mm base and going from guestimations they looked like they were about 1.5x the base, so 60mm. Does this seem reasonable? I typically have the problem where models I make tend to be on the large side, Im constantly having to make my killakanz deffdreaads because of how large the conversions end up being :/

Also as a side note; would you be against larger grots? When using google for sme inspiration it seemed many conversions were larger than the original model.

Favourite Game: When your Warboss on bike wrecks 3 vehicles simply by HoW - especially when his bike is a custom monowheel.

60mm is about right; I've attached a picture of my kitbashed Abberation. He scales nicely with the GW models and is around the 60mm mark. My other grotesques (made from vargheists) are a little shorter but they all look good as a unit.

Will you be sculpting them from scratch?

Thanks for the picture! Looks aweosme, what body have you used there?

Currently sculpting from scratch but with bits mixed in; Basically I have the following kits
Talos
Morghast
Treeman ancient
Those new spirits
Wraithguard/blades
and stuff like the mortis engine and some other bits and bobs, I am a bit of a bit junkie and often by cool kits just to have the bits available. Aka - mortis engine was an amazing buy, great kit, plenty of cool pieces.

I am using those as general bits combined with Milliput/GS and whatever bits are in my bits boxes. However, I also will be making a talos, cronos, wraithguard and some other units that will invariably want some of there cool bits. The feel im going for is harlequin hallucinations, as if your the enemy looking upon a harle force (its DE/CWE and now potentially Harle in terms of codex units).

Currently I have these underway;
  • 3x Legs - simply to get me started, so generic legs, some inverted knees and some normal, I plan to use these as my firsts/practice pieces, saving the morghast legs for when I truely need them, most likely for the cronos and talos.
  • 1 Grotesque - this dudes carrying 2 wraithblades and a ghostaxe, so he has 3 arms, 2 on one side, one on the other, I will be going for a slimmer grotesque feel with him, a semi slaanesh, quick and deadly feel
  • Planned - dude with morghast sword/blade with the mechanical hand from the talos kit for a more brutish classic look.
  • Planned - Spirit-esque version, with a more ghosty intention, so most likely using bits from the spirits and a mortis engine kit I have

  • In general im a modeller so I think my units to have reasonable variety, so im also thinking of maybe doing some weird stuff with a terminator, like taking him apart by the joints and adding in loads of fleshwork, just sort of bizarre things I think a haemonculus that has lived for 1000's of years is in to, because lets be honest, after that many years you'd have made some pretty creepy stuff

If you have any suggestions do fire away, I have a hyper imagination and any ideas sent my way will most likely result in some total abominations! once I get any decent work done i'll post a pic(currently they are all wire frames with a thin bit of milliput/GS to hold the shapes).

He's made from a vampire counts vargheist. I managed to get a box of 3 from my FLGS for £18. They made me a nice unit of Grotesques and I was able to use the wings to make some Tyranid Shrikes. A great buy all around!

The other parts on the model come from the Talos and a spare Reaver jetbike. Here's another view just for fun.

I measured one of mine out. It's exactly 50mm from the sole of the foot on the ground to the highest point of the top cannister, the way I have it assembled, not including the height of the base:
