I could do with a hand identifying the Citadel equivalents of several Vallejo paints. If I can identify which Citadel paints match these Vallejo paints, then it saves me going out and buying new paints that I already have. Before anybody asks - yes, I have already Googled several conversion charts and they haven't helped so far.

So these are the paints:

926 - Red - 033
- Dark Grey
965 - Prussian Blue - 051
315 - Light Mud
- German Camo Black Brown - 150
- Light Grey - 155
- Flat Red - 031
- London Grey - 161
- Flat Brown - 140
- Black Grey - 168
- Scarlet - 026
- Medium Sea Grey - 158
- Off White - 004
- Leather Belt
- Beige Brown - 135
- Red Leather - 136

I'm not sure if they are from the Game Colour or Model Colour range, and I don't know the numbers of some of them (The names are all 100% correct though), but if anybody can identify their closest Citadel equivalent it would be a huge help.

I really hate that chart :\ It's a good effort, and maybe a good CMYK match from the brochures, but there are so many colors that aren't even close.

For instance, they VMC Scarlet Red looks nothing like Citadel Troll Slayer Orange (By the way, why does Vallejo hate us and make a Scarlet in the Game range and Scarlet in the Model range, that are different colors...). They equate Runefang Steel with Silver, when Silver is much, much brighter, and there are closer metallics in the VMC range.

My best advice is to go to a hobby shop that carries both paints. The VMC counter will have a swatch where actual paints are painted onto a white cardboard (I find it hilarious how different these colors are from the indicators on the shelf). Then, take a Citadel paint pot, and compare the bottom of the paint pot to the VMC swatch.

Unlike Vallejo, where some of the colors look quite different in the bottle than dry, Citadel colors look almost identical to what's in the pot.

There are a lot of colors in both ranges where there just isn't a match that's all that close, and I wouldn't fight it. Either use the paint from other range, mix the color, or give up and settle for models looking different. Black Grey on your list is a good example -- there is nothing close to it on the GW range. The darkest colors are Eshin Grey and Skavenblight Dinge (almost identical), which are mich lighter than Black Grey. In fact, for Citadel paint fans, it's a good reason to buy Black Grey

@granander - Thanks, but I've already checked that out. Much appreciated nonetheless.

@Talys - I'm worried now that Scarlet isn't going to be what I need it to be! (I'm painting up a battalion of Napoleonic British Infantry). Perhaps I'll just have to get the Vallejo paints anyway to save confusion :( Thanks for the heads up.

Not all the colors are going to perfect match.

This is the list that you want when it comes to converting Model Color/Model Air to Citadel paints. Keep in mind that most Citadel paints have a Model Color equivalent (or something close) but not all Model Color paints have a Citadel equivalent.

@warpig1815 - Scarlet is actually one you don't have to worry about. Model Scarlet is pretty close to Mephiston, Game Scarlet is pretty close to Wild Ryder Red or Troll Slayer Orange (the orange usually doesn't matter, because this tends to be a layering/blending or highlight color).

@ScootyPuffJunior - Neato, I don't think I've seen that particular Vallejo list before! Thanks! It is definitely a little better, though incomplete, and some of the colors might be the closest match, but they sure aren't a good replacement.

This chart would be much better if (1) it contained all the Citadel colors and simply indicated where there is no good match (like Incubi Darkness) and (2) if it had 1 more column saying how close the color is. For example, if you painted one model Averland Sunset and another Heavy Goldbrown and put them beside each other, one would look yellow and the other would look brown. The column would be very helpful, because often a color matters a lot (like, Mephiston Red on a blood angel, or Macragge Blue on an Ultramarine), whereas other times, the color just has to be close-ish (like Sybarite Green on a Dark Eldar) or just somewhere in ballpark (like Leadbelcher on Grey Knights).
