I tried searching for this but came up empty.

The rules for the lone wolf are a little confusing. He can take melta bombs, but then if he upgrades to TDA it kind of implies he cannot have them anymore. Has anyone looked into this?

Does TDA in Codex: Space Wolves prevent you from taking Melta Bombs?

Here's the text. It's all under 'options' for the lone wolf

• May take melta bombs…5 pts
• May replace power armour, bolt pistol, chainsword and frag and krak grenades with Terminator armour, storm bolter and power weapon…30 pts
- If Terminator armour is chosen, may only take items from the Terminator Weapons list.

The last line starting with the dash is a sub bullet point from the second to last one (it's indented). In case that matters

Taking Terminator Armor replaces your frag and krak grenades, not your melta bombs. It is perfectly legal to put melta bombs on your TDA lone wolf.

How does that square with "may only take items from the Terminator Weapons list." though?

So you're saying that if he takes Terminator Armour he would no longer be able to take Fenrisian Wolves?

I'm not saying anything, I am just relaying what the codex said.

Is this one of those cases where we ignore what the rule says because then the outcome would be dumb?

The effect is that he may only take items from terminator list, as opposed to the special/melee lists.

he can take melta bombs is in addition to all this.

If that's what most everyone thinks, cool. I'd much rather have the option for melta bombs than not.

I wish GW would write better rules though, all they needed was a clause like the one you wrote and everything would be fine.
