Once again, there are
whispers going around that a Kroot codex might be in the works. What are people's thoughts on this? What would it contain? Personally, if such a codex was in the works, it would probably be a "mini-dex" along the size of the new Harlequins codex that
GW just published.
In terms of content, I reckon that the codex would probably revolve around and update the existing Kroot Carnivore Squad; either splitting it up into different units (particularly separating Krootox Riders from the basic squad) or making its composition more customisable a la the Inquisition's Henchmen (e.g. a squad may contain 5 to 20 models of Kroot, Krootox Riders, or Kroot Hounds). In addition, I would expect the codex to expand on the Kroot's wargear - giving Kroots access to Assault-type weapons as well as special weapons (especially Tau weapons given their close affiliation to one another). For instance, allowing Kroots to take Rail Rifles or strapping Lascannons to Krootox Riders.
In terms of what's new, there'll probably be a Master Shaper and maybe even a Psyker (Shaman?) as
HQ options, plus some sort of Transport option - either as a Dedicated Transport or as a Fast Attack option. Perhaps some sort of Flyer with the Assault Vehicle special rule since the Kroot are meant to be good at close combat fluff-wise. A big question though would be whether
GW would import and produce some of the Forgeworld models such as the Knarloc Rider and Great Knarloc; especially since they've never been particularly popular.
Finally, the big question is why
GW would want to publish such a codex. Firstly, it would be a handy way to help round out Tau armies (by way of having to buy extra stuff, I might add) by improving their close combat abilities. In addition, since Kroot are mercenary by nature in the fluff, they could quite easily be classified as (the game's first) Faction-less choice; thereby making use of that "or no Faction" qualifier in the
FOC Restrictions. This latter bit would have the benefit of increasing the appeal of the unit and widening the target audience of the codex.
Anyway, that's enough of my own random ramblings. Anyone have any thoughts?
