Just something I cooked up quick for small, simple fights to start learning the game mechanics better. I want this list to be semi competative, but also fun to play as is. Critic is definitely welcome, but I would prefer to change the list as little as possible
HQ
Chaplain w/Jumppack 105pts

TROOPS
6 Tactical Marines, 1 w/flamer 90pts

6 Tactival Marines, 1 w/ML 95pts

500 games are really fun to play imo. It goes quickly and it's violent haha. You can suggest to play on a 4x4 board instead of the usual 4x6. Make things interesting.

The list look nice, but I would squeeze flamer in the Assault Marine squad instead of the Tac marine. I can't remember how many time a small squad of 5-6 Assault with flamer used their jump pack to position themself perfectly for the flaming massacre on my nasty Orks

I made a list meself
I would personally bring

HQ:
Librarian (90)
Master lvl 2

Elites
Dreadnought (120)
2 Autocannon

Troops
Tac squad (80)
4 man,1 heavy bolter

Tac squad (80)
4 man,1 heavy bolter

Heavy:
Devastator squad (130)
4 missile launchers

this brings the list straight to 500,its gives a punch and not cheesy i think? Should stick good with Imperial fist and Ultramarines Chapter tactics.

You can't take heavies on a 5 man squad. Has to be 10. I like orginal list and agree to flip the flamer.

You can take a heavy at 5 man...

My main problem with your list is it doesn't include any decent anti-armor...and if I look at my Black Templars usual 500pts skirmish army list, it still include a LRC...

so here's my suggestion (without changing any of your units!)

HQ
Chaplain w/Jumppack 105pts

TROOPS
5 Tactical Marines, 1 w/plasmagun, sergeant w/chainsword 85pts

5 Tactical Marines, 1 w/plasmagun, sergeant w/chainsword 85pts

FAST ATTACK
8 Assault Marines 146, 2 w/flamer, sergeant w/chainsword 146pts

Land Speeder w/multi-melta x2 80pts

TOTAL
501 points

tacticals need transports. Putting a few in there would let you learn how to use tanks, and also improve the army.

Tacticals in a rhino, with melta and combi melta. Solid choice to learn the game with.

Yeah maybe dropping the plasma guns and 2 assault marines + 1 flamer to add 2 rhinos would be a good idea, but at 500 pts the tacticals can easily step back and hold objectives

As of sixth, you can. A squad numbering less than 10 can take one special OR one heavy weapon, 10+ can take one of each.

I love the suggestions about the rhinos and knew (from it being constantly pounded into my head by people here) that transport is important. The only problem I have ever had with them is it simply means I have to not only buy them, but then I need to spend time making some vehicles I truly have no desire for. Personally, I prefer pods, but I don't see them being reliable at this small of a game.
Sigh...guess I had to get them eventually anyway....

Dude, if you like pods stick with pods - rhinos are not the only fruit....

They can definitely work at this level, as long as you drop them onto an objective - AV12 3HP ObSec unit might be quite hard for your opponent to remove (at 500 points they may not be expecting any armour). If points is the issue, look at getting them in cheap - trade in the jump packs on your assault squad and they are free (although then not ObSec - but still scoring).

Also, what Chapter Tactics are you going with?

If in doubt, frag it out...

I would recommend fielding real units you'd use in other games, so you can learn the rules to excel with them... there's not much point learning the rules for a unit that isn't quite setup how you'd want to use it in a real game later...

That being said, I would focus on a full Tactical Squad (so you can play with the concept of combat squadding and all that it offers) in a dedicated transport. If you like pods, go with pods.

I would also take a look at a fast unit that has many ways of using it, such as scouts in a land speeder storm. Its versatile loadout and speed are fun to use and difficult to master, so I'd recommend using it; it's one of the best choices in the Codex for 100 points.

Finally, let your HQ join a unit you find "fun" and something you enjoy about the Codex... in this case the Chaplan is nice with a pack and assault marines. I would try this:

Chaplain - jump pack
Tactical Squad (10) - melta, combi-melta, drop pod
Scout Squad (5) - bolters, land speeder storm w/heavy flamer
Assault Squad (5) - power weapon, keep jump packs

Total: 500 points

I don't think it goes too far from your original concept.. you just switch the speeder to a land speeder storm and put some scouts in it, and then combine you tac squads in a pod with some different weapons, and then cut down on the assault squad a bit. The troops in it are going to be your foundation in later, bigger games so that's what I recommend mastering their uses first.
