Maelstrom missions are mainly about quickly capturing the right objective and occasionally making a specific action (shoot flyers, reach enemy lines) which empathize speed. Orks seem to have a good mix of board control with hoards of boyz, and speed with trukks and bikes.

Using trukks to grab objectives and gain points rather than engage enemy units (for a turn at least), and camping big mobs of Orks in your deployment zone seem like a different way to play orks....

Is there anyone who has tried them at playing for the mission, rather than playing for the kill?

My orks excel in Maelstrom, because they swarm over the board. It's pretty easy to hit just about any objective marker.

I've actually won more often than not by kinda doing both, simultaneously achieving the objectives while being stuck up in my opponent's grill. I usually run either a fast list with the battlewagon brigade formation or a board denial list via a green tide formation. As docdoom77 has pointed out, we can swarm the board and storm objectives with relative ease given that even in the case of slower lists we can take deffkoptas which scout ahead to claim midfield or backfield objectives. Then the rest of my army moves up to take or contest the ones held by my opponent. Unless I draw very poor objective cards or ones I can't achieve (we houserule that we auto-discard these and replace it) I normally have no problems getting 2-3 objective cards achieved each turn.

Quite frankly i hate maelstrom missions as orks and tau alike. The game is too unpredictable because of those cards. I have lost soooo many games that i was CRUSHING my opponent, but i didnt table them and they got lucky with the cards so they still won. First game with newcrons we rolled the one where you can score "Hold objective X" if your opponent drew the card. I had 7 points at the end because i had fb, warlord, linebreaker, and 4 pts from cards. He had 15 from cards alone. Yeah, im not joking either. Turn 5 the store was closing so we didnt roll to keep going but he only had a unit of tomb stalkers and immortals left while i still had 1/2 my army.

However, that being said, orks claim like half the board without even trying so theyre pretty good at missions.
