Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and 40k.

I used to collect and play fantasy (dark elves) around 10 years ago and decided to give 40k a try this time.

After much deliberation I've decided to go with Chaos Space Marines as the models look awesome and their fluff really appeals to me. So far I've collected 30 odd cultists 2 helbrutes, 3 obliterators, 10 csm and 4 bikes.

I'm just about done assembling them all and due to start painting them and can't wait!

I wanted to ask some of the more experienced players out there which legion\warband they went for and why?

I want to paint them after legion I can really get behind and enjoy
I really like the background of so many I'm struggling to decide. I like iron warriors, the purge, the scourged, alpha legion, black legion, night lords and death guard. Their backgrounds are all cool and play styles seem like they would be fun too!

I know I haven't narrowed it down much but what's everyone's thoughts?

Thanks!

I went with the Scourged for my army because, in no particular order (a) I like Tzeentch, (b) my friend already has a 1K Sons army I can play with at any time, (c) even if B weren't true, the 1K Sons upgrade packs are a ripoff and are also failcast (my friends 1K Sons are all metal), and (d) I thought the Scourged mini-story was the coolest "Tzeencht" story in the book for a non-Legion army. I should say here that, I created my own Scourged Supplement with rules of my own making, all reviewed for balance and approved by my regular gaming friends. If I took this army to an FLGS for a pickup game, I wouldn't expect too many people to want to play against it, because its not legal and "by the book".

I do play with a friends Deathguard Army semi-frequently, and it is a very, very fun army to play IMO, because the Mark of Nurgle along with so much FNP makes the army so very very tough. Obliterators work very very well with Mark of Nurgle and are excellent Heavy Support options in a Deathguard army, because Deathguard can't take Heavy Weapons, and Nurgle-marked Bikers are T6, so they are very very good as well.

With the collection you've acquired so far, you haven't painted yourself in a corner or anything, its wide open. What I'd do is find the story you like the most, and/or the paint scheme you like the most, and run with it.

I like Night Lords because of their terror tactics. Frighten the enemy so much they cannot reisist once you finaly attack. Black Liegion is pretty cool, if you use the supplement. If not they are kinda genaric. Of course I like my armies to move fast and hit hard so you have that.

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

You should include an entry for the Soul Drinkers. Not sure if they really count, though, since they're more renegades than anything.

The Scourged were one of my favourite paint scheme and god theme too. I like Tzeentch but also Papa Nurgles armies always look cool. I'm gonna end up making multiple armies here i think. I'm sure i can work in interchangeable units somewhere. I do like the look of Nurgle Bikers and i was potentially going to build a Biker squad with a lord, which MoN would suit well. I keep swinging back to the Scourged story though, i think it's one of the coolest for sure.

Thanks for your reply and vote!

This is one of the things that attracted me to the deathguard, that and the very cool looking miniatures! I'll give it a read again i think see if any further inspiration is sparked. Thanks for the reply and Link!

I havn't read anything about the soul drinkers yet i'll give them a google! Name alone sounds awesome!

Night lords definately are high up my list for playstyle and awesome paint jobs.. Little worried about successful lightning bolt painting though. I know on larger scale alot of people use air brushes and build up but may have to give it a test on some old miniatures.

I agree their tactics are what first attracted me to them and got them a shortlist. I'm looking for a hard hitting, fast moving and destructive army. I'd like to mix in some heavy weaponry for backup although im still researching what's good rear line artillery wise. One of hte reasons i got the Oblits was just because they seem so damn versatile! Seem to be able to deal with most things that could be thrown at them. I'm assuming they will get focused?

Red Corsairs because of Huron.
He counts as a psyker which is good for defence. His psychic ability is too random, but the ability to infiltrate (also known as deploy in your zone after everything else is dropped down) D3 units is awesome with the right build of force. He's also quite handy in combat, no Abaddon, but okay.

And the fluff is quite nice for the corsairs.

Going Corsairs allow you to take lots of fast things and paint them red; to appeal to the ORK inside us all. The quick things are what makes the CSM army list viable.

The only downside is I find Huron difficult to fit into lower point lists. He may not get to infiltrate with his ability so he really needs a transport and ideally a Landraider to roll in.

I run my Night Lords with Black Legion backup. Gives be some hard hitting weapons to go with my fast moving assaults.

Thank you for everyones posts and votes. It's great to get a feel for everyones taste in CSM.

I've read ALOT more background on most of the warbands/legions over the weekend and looked countless paint jobs and colour schemes.

Both Fluff wise and paint scheme wise, I have decided to go with The Purge.

I know i'll be using Nurgle marked units regularly and The Purge have an awesome look.

I love the fluff too, the fact that they use biological and chemical warfare to attempt to cleanse the universe of life. The little known about them also allows me to build a bit of my own fluff as i get more experienced with the game.

I'll hopefully start a painting Blog to showcase what im thinking.

Thank you all again!

Favorite warband would have to be the Sons of Malice but out if those listed, probably a toss up between Crimson Slaughter, The Scourged, and The Purge

Legion-wise, it's Alpha Legion followed closely by Iron Warriors
