I have the opportunity to buy 20 ravenwing bikes all from the DV box set and I was wondering if it is possible to build an army with just those or do I need to go out and buy a bunch of stuff to make it work? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Well if you want to run a proper list, no unbound, you'll need Sammael to make those bikes into troops.

As for how competitive it'd be is debatable. While they'll hold up okay on their own, I personally like having some black knights and some missile land speeders if I run Ravenwing, helps you deal with tough to kill targets.

In general, as much as I hate to say it, if you're only running generic ravenwing you're better off points and rules wise if you use white scars.

I'd say go for it. You do need Sammael to make them troops, but it's definitely a start. Also, if you convert a few into a RW Command Squad or buy one, you can give them a nifty banner which makes their Bolter's into Salvo 2/4.

They are SM bikes, just with more feathers.

I made my RW army using them, adding and removing special weapons etc to get the desired results.

You could use them as RW, in which case you need sammael, alternatively you could convert a captain/chaptermaster on bike to match and use them as whitescars (with feathers). Going WS is the more competitive choice.

20 bikes + a chaptermaster will put you at around 600-700 points or so, give or take wargear.

If you are talking about company masters(as dark angels don't have captains/chapter masters), they can't take bikes(page 91).

I like running librarians on bikes (you would have to convert 1) for mobile casters with a power field generator, they make great leaders and if you get invisibility or shrouding it can make them a pain to deal with as they run around grabbing objectives.

Please read what I wrote.

I did explicitly say use them as Whitescars.

This way you can play a bike army that doesn't suck.
