Hi all,

Just thought I would post up a few quick pictures of a standard bearer that I converted and painted up for my new Vostroyan army. I figured seeing as there is only one actual standard bearer model, it would be nice to have some variation between
the regimental standard bearer and the company standard bearers.

He was my first real attempt at large freehand (aside from small runes here and there). It was quite a fun and fairly easy model to paint; As I frequently am painting marines I often forget how quick guardsmen are to complete.

The images probably aren't the best quality as I nothing but my phone to take them with. I tried to balance them as best I could. I am a little disappointed you can't quite see the standard pole, as I spent a chunk of time trying to get a wood grain effect on it.

Happy to hear comments and criticisms.

Hmm not much to add as comments it looks cleanly painted... Maybe you could add some highlights to focus more on face and details. And maybe some dirt splatters and usage marks at the bottom of his robes and flag.

But other than that.. It look realy nice.

Keep up the great work.

The painting is solid. Hard to hate on a good, traditional Vossie scheme. The banner is particularly well done, though. Is it a scratchbuild? What material did you use for the banner?

That's a wonderful banner you have there sir! I also like the color sergeant's decorations.

Thanks for the comments, it's a bit of a shame as I did a bit fair bit of work on the highlight of his face but it has just washed out in the images. Although I could probably go a little bit higher, I might think about that.

The weathering is also an idea too, I considered it originally, but left it off for now as I kind of wanted the model to represent a Vostroyan contingent that had just landed on an existing or previous battlefield (hence the rusted out and destroyed sections). I might revisit it and see what I can do.

The banner is from the Empire State Troopers. I cut the pole out and replaced it with brass road and trimmed the ribbon that is normall on the hand. The only other things that I did was greenstuffing the wax seals onto the ribbons to make them into purity seals, and I replaced the top decorative piece with the traditional Cadian one.

That freehand is awesome! It looks really simple at a glance, but the level of detail in it is impressive!

1400 points of EW/MW Italians (FoW)
2200 points of SoB and Inquisition (40K)
1000 points of orks (40K)
Just starting out with Ultramarines (30K)
Four 1000-2500 point forces for WHFB (RIP)
One orc team (Blood Bowl)

If you like it and it was intended then don't change it. Some times armies look better not ravages by the elements yet as you intended for this army.

Only tips I can give you then, are about photographing your models;
1) try using a black/darker backdrop to see if the colors and detail of your model come out better. (Black usually does that).
2) And use more light while taking the photographs. (Desklight with a daylight lightbulp will do)
3) If you really want to bring out the best in your models, invest $50 - $90 in a small product studio with lights. These really help you to show off your awesome work and skills.
4) (if you can spare the money) buy or else try to borrow a better camera with a good lens. This can really improve the level of details captured in your photo's.

Cheers!

No, I'm curious as to what they are.

Should be kinda obvious given that the OP mentions that its a guardsman in his opening post. Vostroyans are a specific type of regiment of Imperial Guard from Vostroya similar to how Cadians come from Cadia.

I'll take a look.

They can get pretty pricey. I would suggest trying to keep an eye on eBay and other trading sites as large lots come up every now and then.

I got lucky and managed to get two big lots and paid about $1.50 AUD per model, (plus i'll sell some back to make a bit more cash back).

As for the painting, thanks for all the kind words. I wish I had better means to take photos but alas I don't. I might have to invest a lamp or something else that I can use to help with the lighting.
